Cartola 30 Overview
You know what struck me first about Cartola 30? It’s tucked into this narrow medieval street that honestly feels like a movie set – Via Cartoleria winds through the heart of Bologna’s centro storico, and you’ll probably walk past the entrance twice before you spot it. The building itself is this gorgeous restored palazzo, and I mean, when you’re staying literally steps from Piazza Maggiore, you’re not exactly roughing it.
The thing about this place is that it gets Bologna right, if that makes sense. The owners clearly understand that people aren’t just passing through – they’re here for the food, the university vibe, the whole authentic Italian city experience. So instead of trying to be some generic luxury hotel, they’ve leaned into the local character. The rooms have these beautiful high ceilings (we’re talking 14-foot ceilings in some cases) and original architectural details, but they’ve managed to make everything feel current without being sterile. Our room had these incredible floor-to-ceiling windows that opened onto the street, and honestly, waking up to the sound of students heading to class and vendors setting up in the nearby market – that’s the Bologna experience right there.
What really won me over was the attention to details that actually matter when you’re traveling. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood – not just the obvious tourist spots, but where to grab the best mortadella sandwich at 10 PM (it’s at Simoni, about three blocks away), which osteria has tables available on a Friday night, that sort of thing. The location is pretty much perfect if you want to explore on foot – you’re a two-minute walk from the Quadrilatero market area, maybe five minutes to the university district, and the train station is easily walkable if you don’t mind a 15-minute stroll. Parking can be tricky in this part of the city, but they’ve got arrangements with a garage nearby, which honestly saved us a lot of headache.
I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t a place with a massive lobby or a rooftop pool or anything flashy like that. It’s more about getting the fundamentals really, really right. The beds are excellent, the bathrooms are modern and spacious (surprisingly so, given that we’re talking about a historic building), and the breakfast situation is solid without being over the top. They source a lot of stuff locally, which you notice – the coffee is properly Italian, the pastries taste like they came from the bakery around the corner because they probably did.
The 9.4 rating makes complete sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone, but for what it is – a sophisticated, locally-minded hotel in one of Italy’s most underrated cities – it absolutely delivers. Plus, and this might sound small, but the Wi-Fi actually works well throughout the building, which isn’t always a given in these older structures. If you’re planning to spend your days wandering Bologna’s porticoes and your evenings working your way through the local wine bars, this is exactly the kind of place you want to come back to.

The location is fantastic, apartment itself is greatly equipped. Tiziana and Alessandro, our hosts, were amazing. Highly recommend it.
What could be improved: No air-conditioning.Exceptional – Michelle from United Kingdom – 27 June 2025 (10/10)
Beautiful heritage property
Gut ausgestattete, saubere Unterkunft in toller Lage! – Sebastian from Germany – 19 June 2025 (9/10)
All good! Super clean.
What could be improved: Missing soap and shampoo in the showerExceptional – Ingars from Belgium – 3 June 2025 (10/10)
Excellent location in a historic building. The apartment is large and very tastefully furnished and decorated, a pleasure to stay. The host was lovely, helpful and accommodating

Beautiful home and excellent location…
Nice apartment in a good location – Sara from United Kingdom – 11 April 2025 (9/10)
Nice apartment, in an old building, close to the historic centre but with a local neighbourhood vibe.
What could be improved: It’s on the second floor with no lift. No problem for us but be aware if you have heavy baggage.Good location, but very noisy neighbours in the building. – Boriana from Germany – 1 April 2025 (6/10)
Location. Size of apartment.
What could be improved: It seems that most of the apartments in the building are rented out to students. I don't know if we were unlucky or this is a regular occurrence, but there was a lot of noise during the night when there should be quiet hours. The last night of our stay was especially bad with an extremely loud and noisy party going on – shouting, screaming, music – non-stop until 5:30 am, and this was not even a weekend. The whole street was echoing with the noise. This was the only downside, but for us quite a significant one.Perfect. Would definitely recommend and stay again – Lesley from United Kingdom – 23 October 2024 (10/10)
