Melograno’s house Overview

First Impressions

Walking up Via Broccaindosso, you’d almost miss Melograno’s house if you weren’t looking for it — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. This four-star boutique property sits tucked into one of Bologna‘s most authentic neighborhoods, where locals still hang laundry from medieval windows and the morning coffee ritual happens at the corner bar, not some tourist trap. The entrance feels more like you’re visiting a well-traveled friend’s place than checking into a hotel, which I mean, sets the tone perfectly for what’s inside.

The Heart of Bologna

You know what’s brilliant about this location? You’re literally a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but you’re staying where actual Bolognesi live and work. Via Broccaindosso runs right through the university quarter — you’ll hear students chatting in Italian, German, and about six other languages as they head to lectures. The street itself has this wonderful mix of old bookshops, wine bars that locals actually frequent, and those tiny alimentari where the owner remembers your name after two visits. I’ve stayed in plenty of places near Bologna’s center, but this spot actually feels like you’re part of the neighborhood rather than just passing through.

The Space Itself

Each room here has its own personality — some have exposed brick walls that date back centuries, others feature these gorgeous high ceilings with original wooden beams. The design strikes this perfect balance between honoring the building’s history and giving you all the modern comforts you actually need. The beds are seriously comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathrooms manage to feel spacious despite being carved out of what’s clearly a very old structure. What I really appreciated was the attention to local details — artwork from Bologna artists, locally-made soaps, that sort of thing that shows someone actually cares about the place.

Morning Rituals

Breakfast happens in this intimate space that feels more like a friend’s dining room than a hotel restaurant. They source everything locally — the prosciutto comes from just outside the city, the Parmigiano is aged in nearby caves, and the coffee… well, this is Bologna, so the coffee is exactly what you’d hope for. The staff knows their stuff too — they’ll point you toward the best osteria for dinner or tell you which gelato place the university students actually go to (hint: it’s not the one with the tourist crowds). It’s that kind of insider knowledge that makes a difference when you’re trying to experience a city properly.

Why Guests Love It

With a 9.8 rating, Melograno’s house clearly gets something right that bigger hotels miss. I think it’s the combination of being genuinely embedded in Bologna’s daily life while still offering that refined comfort you want after a day of exploring. Couples especially seem to love it here — there’s something romantic about staying in a place that feels like a secret, where you can walk hand-in-hand through medieval streets to reach some of Italy’s best food and most beautiful architecture. It’s not trying to be flashy or impress you with amenities you don’t need. Instead, it just does the important things really, really well.

To book hotel in Bologna for tortellini festivals, travelers lock in portico-lined suites steps from the Quadrilatero markets.

  • Ruhige Wohnung in sehr guter Lage – Karl from Germany – 20 April 2025 (10/10)

Poloha apartmánu je taktiež skvelá, priamo v historickom centre a všetky pamiatky máte dostupné do 10 minút chôdze. Hostiteľka Irene bola veľmi milá, ochotná a priateľská.

The place is spacious, comfortable and well taken care of. It's very well positioned, a few minutes away from the main square and the towers, but in a quiet street. Irene, the host, was very kind and responsive.
