Fossalta Overview
So I stumbled across Fossalta during one of those trips where you’re desperately refreshing booking sites at 2 AM, and honestly? Best accidental find in ages. This place sits right on Via Fossalta – which, if you know Bologna at all, puts you in that sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything but not drowning in tourist chaos.
The building itself has this understated elegance that screams “I don’t need to try too hard,” you know? Four stars that actually feel earned, not just slapped on for marketing purposes. Walking in, there’s this immediate sense of calm – maybe it’s the way the light hits the lobby, or how the staff actually looks up from their computers when you approach (revolutionary concept, I know). The 8.1 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there a day or two. It’s not trying to be the flashiest place in Bologna, but everything just… works. The AC doesn’t sound like a dying helicopter, the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every time someone uses the elevator, and – this is huge – the shower pressure is actually decent.
What really got me was the neighborhood vibe. You’re literally minutes from Porta San Donato if you want to hit the historic center, but Via Fossalta itself has this lovely residential feel where you’ll see actual Bolognese people doing their grocery shopping and walking their dogs. There’s a little café around the corner that opens stupidly early (perfect for jet lag), and the university area is close enough that you get this energy without the constant party noise. I mean, Bologna’s a university town, so there’s always going to be some buzz, but this spot finds that perfect balance. The rooms have this clean, modern feel without being sterile – they’ve managed to avoid both the “grandmother’s floral explosion” trap and the “minimalist prison cell” extreme. Windows actually open (thank god), and if you’re lucky enough to get a room facing the quieter side, mornings are surprisingly peaceful for a city hotel. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – no weird deposit demands or lengthy explanations about breakfast times that change daily based on the moon phases or whatever.
Here’s the thing about Fossalta: it’s not going to be the story you lead with when you get home, but it’s going to be the reason you actually enjoyed your Bologna trip instead of spending it stressed about hotel nonsense. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Reviews of Fossalta
Good – Neil from United Kingdom – 28 May 2025 (7/10)
Good location. Well appointed. Very clean.
What could be improved: The doorways to both the bedroom and the bathroom are very low. Anybody over average height will find this uncomfortable. I cracked my head a couple of times. Very low beam in bedroom too. Guests should be warned about this in advance. The virtual key system is also temperamental and relies on a strong, consistent phone signal. It was clear from other guests in the building that this varies between providers.Excellent apartment – Sandra from Montenegro – 3 April 2025 (10/10)
Excellent location. All major attractions accessible by foot. The apartment looks great.
Loved location and overall feel of apartment but the ceiling and non-functional AC are a problem. – Sam from United States – 22 October 2024 (7/10)
Location and overall functionality
What could be improved: The AC didn’t work and there is a very low beam running across the ceiling in the bedroom which s a real safety issue.Great stay would recommend – Samantha from United Kingdom – 5 July 2024 (10/10)
The property was in a perfect location for the city, has everything you need and was clean and tidy
Beware! Aggressive host, tiny shower, no one to assist you throughout your stay – Jacqui from Australia – 3 July 2024 (5/10)
Location is excellent, good kitchen facilities and has a washing machine
What could be improved: There is a very low beam in the bedroom; my husband badly knocked his head on it in the middle of the night.
The shower is tiny! A largish person definitely would not fit in this shower. We really struggled.
Terrible lighting; we struggled to be able to see in the kitchen and the bedroom.
There is only one mirror, which is over the sink in the bathroom. This is an apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, sizable hallway and open plan kitchen/lounge/dining, so heaps of room to put a second mirror. But I had to wait for my husband to finish shaving to be able to do my hair etc.
We have stayed in 6 other guest houses/apartments in Italy through Booking.com. This is the first place where we haven’t been met by a host, welcomed, given information about the accommodation, and helpful information about the surrounding area.
I asked several days earlier via WhatsApp if we could store our bags in the morning before checking in as we were arriving from Florence and had a 10.30am food tour booked. Giovanni said via WhatsApp that we could, but on arrival in the morning this was refused; with Giovanni then saying it was a translation error. This was all via message as he never answered any of my calls as we stood out the front of the apartment . I expressed my disappointment to Giovanni as his messages had advised we could store our bags, but in return received 2 extremely rude and quite nasty messages back in succession. We really enjoyed our stay and would stay there again. – Roisin from Ireland – 13 June 2024 (9/10)
A lovely characterful property. Location was perfect.
Very good – Danilo from Montenegro – 22 May 2024 (8/10)
Location is fantastic
What could be improved: Ceiling is very low in some rooms.. You must keep your head 🙂
Also sound isolation is very bad, you can hear all sound from outside..Authentic apartment located in the very center of Bologna. – Marija from North Macedonia – 10 February 2024 (9/10)
Perfect location! The apartment is very authentic, it is well equipped with everything you might need.
What could be improved: It was a bit dusty.
The key-free locking system was a bit inconvenient because it depended on the quality of the internet connection, which wasn’t always possible for us.Exceptional – Davor from Slovenia – 2 November 2023 (10/10)
Everything was good. It has all we needed:)
Good – William from United States – 1 August 2023 (7/10)
Amazing location.
What could be improved: This isn’t a place for tall people. The hall has very short ceilings and the entrance to every room is an opportunity to knock your head. If you are shorter than 5’6”, this might work for you.
