Maison Marescalchi Overview

You know what struck me first about Maison Marescalchi? The address might look intimidating with all those Italian specifics, but once you figure out you’re heading to the second floor of this elegant building on Via Francesco Rismondo, it actually feels like you’re staying in someone’s beautifully appointed home rather than a typical hotel. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place special.

The Saragozza neighborhood is one of those Bologna gems that locals love but tourists often miss – it’s got this perfect residential vibe where you’ll hear Italian conversations drifting from apartment windows and catch the scent of someone’s Sunday sauce simmering. You’re literally a pleasant walk from the historic center, but far enough out that you escape the tourist crowds and get a real feel for how Bolognesi actually live. I mean, there’s something pretty magical about grabbing your morning espresso from the corner bar where the owner remembers your order after two days. The whole area has these gorgeous porticoes (Bologna’s famous covered walkways) that’ll keep you dry when it rains, and trust me, you’ll want to wander them constantly.

What really sets Maison Marescalchi apart is the attention to detail – and I’m not talking about generic luxury stuff, but the kind of thoughtful touches that show someone who actually cares runs this place. The rooms have this sophisticated Italian elegance without being stuffy, sort of like staying in your stylish friend’s apartment if your friend happened to have impeccable taste in linens and lighting. The building itself has character – you know, the kind of old-world charm with thick walls that actually keep things quiet, unlike those modern hotels where you hear every conversation in the hallway. Parking can be tricky in this part of Bologna (honestly, it’s tricky everywhere in the city), but the staff knows the neighborhood well enough to point you toward the best options nearby.

The 9.5 rating isn’t just numbers on a screen – you feel it in how smoothly everything runs, from check-in to recommendations for where to grab the best tortellini in brodo. The staff has that wonderful Italian hospitality thing down perfectly, where they’re genuinely helpful without being overwhelming. They’ll tell you which osteria serves the locals (not just tourists) and which streets to avoid during the evening passeggiata when everyone’s out strolling. What I really appreciated was how they treated the place like they were proud of it, not just working there – there’s a difference, and you notice it immediately.

If you’re the type who wants to experience Bologna like you live there for a few days, rather than just checking off tourist boxes, this is your spot. You’ll end up taking the long way back to the hotel just because the neighborhood is so pleasant to walk through, and honestly, isn’t that exactly what a great travel experience should feel like?

  • Exceptional – Donna from United Kingdom – 20 May 2025 (10/10)

The location was excellent. Our host was very helpful and friendly. We arrived late and left earlier than normal check out time. We also needed a taxi back to the airport. Allesandra arranged this for us. The apartment had everything you needed, clean with plenty of room for two.

What could be improved: If you are a light sleeper, there can be a little noise late at night or early in the morning as people come & go.

  • Perfect Place for a Couple to Explore Bologna – Naomi from United States – 25 October 2024 (10/10)

Our stay at Maison Marescalchi in Bologna was wonderful , thanks to our wonderful hostess Alessandra! She went above and beyond to make our trip easy and enjoyable—my husband was feeling ill and she let us check in early and arranged a taxi for us when we left, even checking to make sure the ride went smoothly. The location was perfect: just off a main road but on a quiet street, and only a five-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore and also Neptune’s Fountain, with plenty of restaurants, shopping and sights within 15 minutes or less. The place itself was spotless, the ideal size for two, and had all the amenities we needed, including a washer with dryer. Highly recommend staying here for a comfortable, convenient, and welcoming – perfect for exploring Bologna!

What could be improved: No complaints
