Locanda dell’Orsa Overview

You know what struck me first about Locanda dell’Orsa? It’s tucked away on the second floor of this classic Bologna building on Via Marsala, and honestly, you might walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. But that’s actually part of its charm – it feels like discovering a secret that only locals know about.

The whole place has this authentic Italian pensione vibe that you just can’t fake. I mean, we’re talking about a 4-star spot that doesn’t try to be flashy or over-the-top modern. The rooms have character – real hardwood floors that creak just slightly when you walk (in a good way), and windows that actually open so you can hear the morning sounds of Bologna waking up. The neighborhood itself is properly residential, so you’re not dealing with tourist crowds right outside your door, but you’re still close enough to everything that matters. Via Marsala runs parallel to some of the main arteries, which means you can walk to the centro storico in about fifteen minutes, maybe twenty if you stop for coffee along the way.

What really gets me about this place is how the staff actually seems to care. Check-in was smooth – no standing around while they figure out their computer system – and they gave me those kinds of local tips that make a difference. Like, they’ll tell you which osteria around the corner fills up fast (and is worth the wait) or which bus line to take if you want to avoid the walking crowds near the university. The 9.1 rating makes sense once you’re there because it’s not trying to be something it’s not. The breakfast spread is solid Italian fare, the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building, and the beds are properly comfortable – not too soft, not too firm. I slept well, which honestly doesn’t always happen when I’m traveling.

Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this part of Bologna (welcome to any Italian city, really), but there’s a garage nearby that the hotel can arrange, and the train station is close enough that you could easily arrive without a car. The whole area comes alive in the evenings when locals are out for their passeggiata, and you’ll find yourself naturally falling into that rhythm. There’s something satisfying about staying in a place where you feel like you’re experiencing Bologna the way people actually live there, rather than just checking boxes on a tourist itinerary. If you’re looking for a pool or a spa or room service until midnight, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want to wake up in a real Bologna neighborhood, grab a proper espresso from the bar downstairs, and spend your day exploring without feeling like you’re staying in some generic hotel bubble – well, that’s exactly what Locanda dell’Orsa delivers.

Reviews of Locanda dell’Orsa

  • Superb – Katerina from Greece – 7 July 2025 (9/10)

Excellent location! Very clean room and the manager Gaia was very helpful!

What could be improved: You have probably seen it in the description but the room has a lot of steps with no elevator available so be prepared if you have any mobility issues..

  • Superb – Robert from Poland – 24 June 2025 (9/10)

clean nice room, close to the historical center, decent clean comfortable bathroom. overall rating very good

What could be improved: the problem is the lack of an elevator and the need to go up to the second, rather high floor

  • Exceptional – Jessica from United Kingdom – 15 June 2025 (10/10)

Really clean, much nicer inside than expected, good value for money and the staff were really helpful over the phone.

  • Superb – Mirelm from Switzerland – 12 June 2025 (9/10)

Loved my stay here! The location is perfect, and the hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful. The bed was super comfy, and the bathroom was spotless with a nice, modern shower. Having the bus station right next door made getting around really easy. Highly recommend!

What could be improved: Noise was coming from the street and the room next to it.

  • Superb – E from United Kingdom – 4 June 2025 (9/10)

Location. Room very good and modern with lovely breakfast basket. Cold water in fridge. Great ensuite bathroom. Best quality toiletries. Fresh white bath robes and towels.

What could be improved: No lift. Be prepared to walk a few flights of stairs.

  • Superb – Catherine from United Kingdom – 18 May 2025 (9/10)

Good location, we had been to Bologna before and knew where we wanted to eat and drink. This room was perfect for both. It was quite noisy at night, we always travel with earplugs so it was fine. Also do read the info about it being on a second floor with no lift. Fine for us but others may struggle.

  • Exceptional – Mems from United States – 18 May 2025 (10/10)

Great location, staff was very helpful. The hotel is located in a beautiful old building and is affiliated with the restaurant down the street of the same name, which is extremely popular and had great food. Room was very clean, loved the robes!

What could be improved: The room was a little dark, but otherwise extremely comfortable. There was a lot of Friday nightlife activity below our window, but we slept fine.

  • Stylish accommodation in a great location. – Laura from United Kingdom – 13 May 2025 (8/10)

Great location, comfortable bed, powerful shower, lovely extras for showering and snacking.

What could be improved: Only down side was the noise from the street and the people staying next door. This happens when staying in a city centre though so I'd say make sure you've got good ear plugs and get it booked!

Be warned, there's a few flights of stairs to climb up to the room so bear that in mind if you might struggle with that.
