Il Campo Apartments Overview
Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of Bologna apartments, and Il Campo hits that sweet spot between actually living somewhere and just being another tourist passing through. You walk into this place on Via Giovanni Amendola and there’s this immediate sense of… I don’t know, authenticity? It’s not trying too hard to be boutique-y, but it’s clearly been thought through by people who understand what travelers actually need.
The location is honestly brilliant if you know Bologna at all. Via Giovanni Amendola sounds formal, but you’re basically a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore – and I mean a real five minutes, not that inflated hotel-speak version. More importantly, you’re close enough to the university area that you get these great little spots that locals frequent, but far enough from the main tourist crush that you can actually sleep at night. There’s this fantastic osteria around the corner that I stumbled onto purely by accident, and the kind of neighborhood bakery where the woman behind the counter will remember your usual order by day three.
What really sold me on Il Campo was the apartment setup itself. Each unit feels like someone’s actual home – which, honestly, is rarer than you’d think in Bologna’s rental market. The kitchens are properly equipped (I mean, you can actually cook pasta without hunting for a decent pot), and the living spaces have that lived-in comfort without being shabby. The WiFi is solid, which matters if you’re working remotely, and the washing machines are those efficient European models that actually get your clothes clean. Small thing, but the shower pressure is excellent – I’ve been burned by too many “charming” Italian apartments with sad trickles of lukewarm water.
The staff deserves a mention too. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and when I had questions about where to find specific ingredients for cooking, they knew exactly which markets to recommend. Not the touristy Mercato delle Erbe (though that’s nice too), but the actual neighborhood spots where prices make sense and the produce is better. That’s the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference.
Is everything perfect? Well, the building’s old – you’ll hear some creaking, and the elevator is one of those tiny European cages that fits maybe two people and a small suitcase. But honestly, that’s Bologna for you. The trade-off is these gorgeous high ceilings and windows that actually open properly, something you don’t get in modern hotels.
The 8.3 rating makes sense to me. It’s not luxury in the marble-and-champagne sense, but it’s genuinely comfortable in a way that makes you want to extend your stay. I ended up working from the living room most mornings with coffee from the Bialetti they provide, watching the street come alive below. That’s the kind of experience you remember long after you’ve forgotten which hotel chain you stayed at in other cities. For Bologna, especially if you’re planning to be here more than just a night or two, Il Campo gets it right.

Reviews of Il Campo Apartments
Good value and location close to train station – Seow from Singapore – 11 May 2025 (8/10)
Location being close to the train station. Good if you plan some side trips from Bologna. 15 min walk to the historic town.
What could be improved: We had to wash the dishes and clear all the trash which can be a pain to plan unlike when you pay a cleaning fee for Airbnb. Also you have to buy toilet paper. Sometimes on holiday you just don’t want to be bogged down by all these logistics.
However the staff were very responsive and helpful. Also you have to set up the sofa bed yourself even if you indicate you book the place for four person.
Basically it’s quite a DIY place. Good value for money but if you prefer staying at a place that provides everything like you are really on a holiday this place might not be for you.Very good – Yevheniia from Ukraine – 3 April 2025 (8/10)
Very cute and comfy apartment, also extremely friendly and helpful stuff!
What could be improved: Nothing extreme, we were happy overall!Very convenient and comfortable apartment – Julia from Australia – 23 September 2024 (8/10)
Communication with the host was quick and easy. We arrived after 10pm and someone was there to meet us . Any questions we had were answered promptly .
The apartment was very comfortable with everything we needed. The location is also very convenient with shops, post office , banks and public transport all close by.
What could be improved: The location is very convenient but is a 20 – 25 min walk to the centre of historic Bologna . It wasn’t a problem for us and buses are available although we didn’t use them . Also at night there were people hanging around in the street as it is near centrale station . I might have felt uncomfortable had i been on my own – although no one ever caused us any problems. It’s the same in most cities that i have been to – not a major issue just something to think about .Superb – Dirk from Belgium – 17 September 2024 (9/10)
Perfect location close to city centre of Bologna and to railway station for extra trips e.g. Florence and Venice. All you need with the comfort and facilities offered in this cosy appartement suited for 3p. The windows do perfectly isolate some normal city noise from the street
What could be improved: Light noise in the entry hall after midnight due to some unrespectful people.Superb – Laura from Finland – 19 July 2024 (9/10)
Apartment was very clean and there was everything we needed. Doublebed was nice but sofabed wasn't so good. Though it served well for our children. Aircondition worked well. Noise from other apartments and outside reached to apartment, but it didn't bother us. But if you are a light sleeper you should use earplugs. Staff was very helpfull and answered all our questions. Apartment was located near railway- and bus stations but about 1,5km away from Piazza Maggiore. On the other hand it took only couple days to see everything in old citycentre and after that we took train or bus to explore other locations. Also the restaurants near Piazza Maggiore was much expensive than a bit further. So in our point of view location was fine. 👌
Good location, nice and comfortable apartment. – Joanna from Poland – 7 April 2024 (8/10)
This apartement offers just enough comfort to stay there with a family. There's a separate bedroom, in case someone needs privacy or silence. There's enough space to put things on and in. The beds are comfortable, there's a washing mashine, a hair dryer, soft and clean bed linen and towels. The water bottle waiting for us in the fridge was a super nice thing after a travel with kids.
Great appartment and location, would definitely recommend. – Georgina from New Zealand – 20 September 2023 (8/10)
Very much
Very good – Watson from United Kingdom – 25 June 2023 (8/10)
It was a well furnished, clean apartment that was exactly what we were looking for in staying a couple of nights. Would recommend.
What could be improved: There were only 2 rolls of toilet paper, which wasn't enough for 3 nights/ 3 people. We had to buy some more. Nothing else bad though.Superb – Marcin from Poland – 17 August 2022 (9/10)
Great Apartment , the location is perfect aswell!
