I Portici Hotel Bologna Overview
You know what struck me first about I Portici Hotel Bologna? The moment you walk through those doors on Via dell’Indipendenza, you’re hit with this sense that someone actually thought about every detail. I mean, it’s not trying too hard to be fancy, but there’s this understated elegance that feels very… well, very Bologna, honestly.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to really experience the city. You’re literally steps from Piazza Maggiore – I’m talking a five-minute stroll past those gorgeous medieval arcades that Bologna is famous for. And here’s something most tourists don’t realize: Via dell’Indipendenza is one of those streets where locals actually walk, not just a tourist corridor. You’ll hear Italian conversations floating up from the sidewalk in the morning, smell fresh pastries from the corner bakery, and there’s this authentic energy that you just can’t manufacture. The rooms facing the street can get a bit lively in the evenings (it’s Italy, after all), but honestly, that’s part of the charm. If you’re a light sleeper though, just ask for a room facing the courtyard when you book.
What really sets this place apart – and I’ve stayed in plenty of four-star hotels across Europe – is how they’ve managed to blend modern comfort with that distinctly Bolognese character. The staff actually knows the neighborhood; they’ll send you to the little osteria three blocks down that doesn’t have a sign, or tell you which gelato place the university students frequent (hint: it’s not the one with the long tourist line). The breakfast spread is solid, nothing revolutionary, but they source from local suppliers and you can taste the difference in the prosciutto and cheese selection. I actually ended up chatting with the morning desk clerk about the best markets – turns out he grew up two neighborhoods over and had opinions about which vendors to hit first.
The rooms themselves feel thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter. My bathroom had this beautiful tile work that felt distinctly Italian without being kitschy, and the bed was exactly the right firmness (you know how hotel beds can be a total gamble). Small touches matter here – decent water pressure, outlets where you actually need them, and thank god, proper blackout curtains. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving, but honestly, you’re better off leaving the car and walking everywhere from here anyway. The train station is close enough that you can easily day-trip to Florence or Venice, but far enough that you’re not dealing with that constant tourist rush.
Look, Bologna isn’t Rome or Venice – it doesn’t hit you over the head with obvious beauty. But if you want to experience what Italians call “la dolce vita” without fighting crowds for every photo, this hotel gets it. The 8.5 rating isn’t just numbers; it reflects that sweet spot where comfort meets authenticity. You’re not just sleeping in Bologna, you’re actually living in it for a few days.

The selection and quality of the breakfast.. excellent !!
What could be improved: The room and bathroom are austere and small especially the bathroom. The location was a ten minutes walk to the center in the middle oh a huge street construction.I will definitely stay at the same hotel on my next trip to Bologna. – Ahmet from Turkey – 7 July 2025 (10/10)
The rooms are contemporary, spotless, and kept in excellent condition.
The hotel's location is convenient for both business and leisure.
I cannot comment on the breakfast, as I did not try it.
What could be improved: There were a few dust bunnies on the floor.Great stay in a clean and centrally placed hotel – Chris from United Kingdom – 5 July 2025 (7/10)
A very serene and calm hotel with extremely helpful staff. Clean and spacious rooms for the price we paid. Lovely terrace to have a drink in the evening. About 10mins walk to main historic areas.
What could be improved: Aircon centrally set to 20 degrees, so very hot in room when outside temp was 38 degrees this week. Lovely terrace bar was closed in the afternoon and didn’t open until 6pm. Would have loved to have read a book out there.Exceptional – Oleksandra from United Kingdom – 4 July 2025 (10/10)
Great location, good hotel with fresh rooms, nice terrace

Great location but average room. – Melissa from United Kingdom – 25 June 2025 (7/10)
Nice hotel great location and friendly staff
What could be improved: Unfortunately a lot of building works outside which are quite noisy. The ground floor rooms aren’t great either unfortunately .Very comfortable hotel with pleasant and helpful staff in a very convenient location. – Michael from Ireland – 25 June 2025 (9/10)
Room was very simply decorated but extremely comfortable. The hotel is within walking distance of the train station. Major road works might have impacted the stay but proved to be a relatively minor inconvenience.
What could be improved: The breakfast buffet might have been slightly more interesting
