I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to I Portici di Santo Stefano, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. It’s tucked into this gorgeous stretch of Via Santo Stefano where the medieval porticoes create these amazing shadowy corridors, and the hotel itself kind of blends right into the historic fabric of the street. But that’s actually the whole point, you know? You’re literally staying inside one of Bologna’s most atmospheric neighborhoods, where locals still do their morning shopping and students from the university wander by with their books.

The thing about this place is that it gets the balance right between being properly comfortable and feeling authentically Bolognese. The rooms have this sort of refined simplicity – not trying too hard to be boutique-y, but clearly thought through. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re right in the heart of things. The thick walls help, but also Via Santo Stefano isn’t a nightlife street, so you get that perfect combination of being central but actually getting some sleep. The staff genuinely knows the area – I mean, they sent me to this tiny osteria about three blocks away that I never would have found on my own, and it ended up being one of my best meals in Bologna.

Here’s what sold me on the place: you walk out the front door and you’re maybe two minutes from the Basilica di Santo Stefano (which locals call the “Seven Churches” though there are really only four now – long story). Turn left and you’re heading toward the university district with all its energy and good cheap food. Turn right and you’re walking toward the center, past some of the most beautiful medieval architecture in Italy. I stayed here in October when the weather was perfect for wandering, and honestly, the location made me feel like I was living in Bologna rather than just visiting it. The 7.9 rating makes sense – it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but it does exactly what a good four-star should do in a city like this. You get comfort, character, and a real sense of place without paying historic palace prices.

  A great apartment much bigger than expected with great facilities. Close to the Palazzo Isolano where we had a family wedding. Very easy to contact the host on the day, connected via WhatsApp.

  L'appartement est très bien situé, à 7 mn de la belle place Santo Stefano. Au 1er et, il est très agréable, calme et lumineux (sauf la cuisine sans fenêtre). Le lit est en mezzanine. Equipement impeccable ( grande douche, machine à laver, télé, wifi, congélateur,…). Franchement, une base idéale pour découvrir Bologne. (Supermarché vers la place Santo Stefano, Sinon petits commerces à proximité).
  
  What could be improved: Petit souci de chauffe eau le 1er jour. Le propriétaire a été très réactif et ça a été réglé tout de suite…

  Perfect location. Spacious apartment. Nice bathroom and a plus for a washing machine. A lot of space for clothes and comfortable bed.
  
  What could be improved: Not e en tea/coffee available. Apartment could be cleaner, strange scent in the kitchen, stains on the sofa. Check in was kind of rushed and not really detailed instructions . You need to park car outside ZTL but it’s a common thing for most locations like that in Bologna centre

  The size of the apartment was ok.
  
  What could be improved: the floor of the apartment was very dirty all over the place. there was no coffee machine, no towels to clean the dishes (which were not clean) no paper towels, no bowls, there was no liquid soap in the bathroom, no shower gel. no international TV channels. the wardrobe for clothes was very far from the bedroom.

  Apartamento muy nuevo y muy bien ubicado, cerca del centro y con paradas muy cercanas para moverte por todo Bolonia. Buena atención y amabilidad de la persona que se encargaba de darnos las llaves (Utku). Muy buenas instalaciones con todo lo necesario para unos días en Bolonia.

  Staff was very responsive both at checkin and during stay to any issues. Location was good in a nice area with easy walk to many attractions. Apartment had washer and dryer unit that worked well.
  
  What could be improved: Layout was not most practical with bed up a flight of stairs in a small loft area. No room for bags or to move around up there. Building has no lift so it is at least 1 flight of stairs depending on where your unit is located.

  Værten var meget sød og imødekommende. Da vi spurgte efter nogle ting, der manglede i lejligheden, blev det fikset morgenen efter. God service. Dejlig stor lejlighed med god beliggenhed
  
  What could be improved: For at være ærlig var køkkenet ikke helt rent ved ankomst. Der manglede redskaber til opvask, som dog heldigvis blev skaffet hurtigt af værten. Da vi havde klaret det var det et ganske dejligt ophold
