Hotel San Giorgio Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel San Giorgio on Via Alessandrini, you immediately get that feeling you’ve stumbled onto something good. It’s not flashy or trying too hard — just this solid three-star property that sits perfectly in Bologna‘s historic center. The building has that classic Italian charm without being stuffy, and honestly, the location alone makes you feel like you’ve made a smart choice. This boutique hotel offers an authentic Italian experience that appeals to discerning travelers seeking genuine hospitality.

The Heart of Bologna

Here’s the thing about staying right in Bologna’s center — you can actually walk everywhere that matters. I mean, you’re literally steps from Piazza Maggiore and the university district, which means the city’s best trattorias and that incredible morning market buzz are right outside your door. The couples who stay here aren’t wrong when they give the location a 9.6 rating. You know what’s great? You can grab an aperitivo at one of those tiny bars locals love, then just stroll back without worrying about taxis or figuring out public transport. The proximity to cultural landmarks and dining venues makes this location particularly valuable for visitors.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was exactly what you’d want from a well-run Italian hotel — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully arranged without unnecessary frills. The beds are actually good (not always a given in this price range), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. What I appreciated most was how quiet it stays despite being in the city center — the windows do their job, so you get the energy of Bologna during the day but can actually sleep at night. Each accommodation is designed with guest comfort as the priority.

Why People Keep Coming Back

There’s something to be said for a place that has more repeat guests than most other properties in the area. The staff genuinely seems to remember faces, and they’ll point you toward that little osteria around the corner that doesn’t show up in guidebooks. It’s those small touches — like actually helpful local recommendations instead of just handing you a tourist map — that make the difference. The service feels personal without being intrusive, which is honestly refreshing. This dedication to guest satisfaction creates lasting impressions that encourage return visits.

Why Guests Love It

Look, Hotel San Giorgio isn’t trying to be something it’s not, and that’s exactly why it works so well. You’re paying for a solid stay in an unbeatable location, with people who know how to make travelers feel welcome. The 8.1 rating reflects what you actually get — reliable comfort in the heart of one of Italy’s best food cities. When you can walk to the best tortellini in Bologna in under five minutes, then come back to a comfortable room where everything just works, well, that’s pretty much the perfect setup for exploring this incredible city.

Excellent location. Literraly 5 min walk from Fontana di Nettuno and all the historic area of Bologna.

What could be improved: Location, friendly staff, price – in short everything

  • Very good – Nigel from Malta – 2 July 2025 (8/10)

The central location , good restaurants and a great bar across the road

What could be improved: Bathroom and shower cubicle were very small

  • Very good – Razhan from Iraq – 19 June 2025 (8/10)

Room was nice, staff very friendly and helping. Probably best location in city.

What could be improved: Breakfast could've been better

  • Made our trip with their friendliness and help/advice – Paul from United Kingdom – 22 May 2025 (9/10)

Excellent, central location. Very friendly, helpfull staff and as an added bonus coffee and a croissant was provided each money which we hadn't expected.

What could be improved: If I have to say anything critical it was that the bathroom was a little on the snug side.

  • Fabulous location, lovely helpful staff, very clean, just needs a refurb. – Sue from United Kingdom – 18 May 2025 (7/10)

The location was brilliant, close to restaurants and bars, also easy to walk everywhere. Staff very helpful, rooms very clean.

What could be improved: The hotel rooms are very tired. Needs a total refurbishment.

  • We would recommend Hotel San Giorgio for a short stay in Bologna. – Peter from United Kingdom – 16 May 2025 (9/10)

We would recommend Hotel San Giorgio for a short stay in Bologna. The hotel accommodation offers affordability and functionality over luxury or extensive amenities. We chose the hotel primarily because of its location, a 10-minute walk to the Piazza Maggiore, and its overnight concierge service. Our room was large and whilst simply furnished, it came with a king-sized bed. It was clean, and the towels were changed every other day.
The Hotel may not have a lounge bar or offer evening meals, however, facilities such as these were never needed as its location is fantastic with bars, a gelato parlour, quality Trattoria and Restaurants within a stone’s throw. A nice touch was the complimentary breakfast of croissants and coffee, which removed the need to leave the hotel in search of an early morning cuppa.
Personally, as we were leaving early in the morning, we preferred a hotel that could organise a taxi for us, and this was no problem at all to arrange and arrive within five minutes of being ordered. We had heard that some of the Airbnb or other apartments did not allow you to leave before 8 am because of the noise that could be caused by luggage being trundled along the historic streets. This was not a problem with this Hotel.
Would we go back to Bologna? Yes, most certainly. Would we stay at the Hotel San Giorgio? Yes, and we intend to and we look forward to meeting the friendly staff again who made our stay so pleasant. Grazie mille

What could be improved: The only negative comment about our room was that its air-conditioning hadn’t been turned on yet. Whilst May temperatures were warm enough for us Brits, it wasn’t warm enough for Bolognans who were still wearing winter coats and scarves when walking around in the sunshine. However, we found the room warm on the night, and whilst the windows did open, noise from the street and in particular conversations from the popular bar opposite would prevent most people sleeping with the window open.

  • Very good location. Can use a small renovation. – Sofia from Greece – 15 May 2025 (7/10)

The hotel is very close to the center.
The rooms were clean and they were cleaning every day.
My single room was spacious enough for one person.
    The stuff was very polite.

What could be improved: Since it is close to the center, it gets very noisy in the night. Bring your earplugs.
The breakfast is very small: A coffee and a croissant.
The bathroom could use some renovation. For example in my room, the shower has only the top, stable faucet and not the one you can move yourself for doing body and not hair.

  • Great location , clean rooms and helpful staff – Francesca from Malta – 9 May 2025 (9/10)

Location is very convenient and the staff were extremely helpful.

What could be improved: Rooms are slightly especially the bathrooms

  • Locations is fab! Rooms very clean and functional. – Clare from United Kingdom – 5 May 2025 (9/10)

Location is fantastic! Walking distance to everything in the historic center, and 15 mins from the main train station.
Rooms were spotlessly clean and staff were all friendly and welcoming.

What could be improved: Shower was a little snug, so if you're above average build you might struggle if you get our room.
Noisy outside at all hours, there's lots of bars nearby but it was the glass bottle recycling that was a surprise – but double glazing did the trick to keep the noise out!

  • Great hotel, best location – Antonios from Greece – 28 April 2025 (9/10)

the hotel is located in the city center, near all the major view points. the staff was very helpfull with everything we needed, from taxis to directions or suggestions. great experience
