Hotel Maggiore Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Hotel Maggiore feels refreshingly unpretentious — this three-star property on Via Emilia Ponente doesn’t try to be something it’s not, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work. The lobby has this lived-in warmth that immediately tells you this place has been welcoming travelers for years, and the staff greets you like they actually remember the regulars (which, given how many guests return here, they probably do). You know what struck me most? The genuine smiles — not the rehearsed hotel variety, but the kind you get when people actually enjoy their work.

Location That Actually Makes Sense

Here’s the thing about Bologna — everyone talks about staying in the historic center, but Via Emilia Ponente puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to matter but far enough to breathe. I mean, you’re looking at maybe a 15-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, which is nothing when you consider you’ll have free parking right at the hotel — and trust me, that’s gold in this city. The area feels authentically Bolognese, with local cafés and shops that tourists haven’t discovered yet. Couples seem to get this location particularly well, rating it highly for romantic getaways, probably because it strikes that perfect balance between accessibility and intimacy.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was exactly what you’d expect from a well-run three-star — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully arranged without any unnecessary frills. The bed was genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathroom, while compact, had everything you actually need. What I appreciated most was the attention to details that matter — good lighting for reading, enough outlets where you need them, and windows that actually open for fresh air. It’s not going to win design awards, but it absolutely nails the fundamentals that make a stay pleasant.

The Service Philosophy

There’s something to be said for a place where the staff recognizes returning guests by name — and at Hotel Maggiore, that happens more often than you’d expect. The front desk team has this knack for being helpful without being hovering, offering local recommendations that feel genuine rather than scripted. When I needed directions to a specific restaurant off the beaten path, they didn’t just point me toward the tourist spots but actually knew the neighborhood well enough to suggest a better route. It’s this kind of local knowledge that makes the difference between a generic stay and one that feels connected to the city.

Why Guests Love It

The 8.7 rating isn’t an accident — Hotel Maggiore succeeds because it focuses on doing the basics exceptionally well rather than chasing trends. The repeat guest rate tells the real story here; people come back because they know exactly what they’re getting, and it consistently delivers. For Bologna, where you want to spend your time exploring incredible food and medieval streets rather than lounging in an over-designed lobby, this approach makes perfect sense. It’s reliable, well-located, and run by people who understand that sometimes the best hospitality is simply making everything work smoothly so you can focus on why you came to this remarkable city in the first place.

  • Overall a good value experience with good staff – Marcel from Australia – 9 June 2025 (10/10)

Free parking onsite, good neighbourhood, extensive breakfast, recently refurbished room, close to some restaurants and supermarkets. About 10-12 minute drive to cities edge on a main arterial. Bikes for rent if needed. Staff were great and had fairly good English

What could be improved: Bed was quite firm, lounge downstairs was busy at times so hard to work if you’re there to do that (due to the echo and people talking). Could use a wifi mesh repeater to get better internet speeds upstairs compared to the lounge where it was fast
