Hotel San Donato – Bologna centro Overview
You know what struck me first about Hotel San Donato? The location is absolutely perfect – I mean, you’re literally on Via Zamboni, which is basically the beating heart of Bologna’s university district. Walking out the front door, you’re immediately surrounded by that wonderful chaos of students rushing to lectures, the smell of fresh pasta wafting from trattorias, and those gorgeous porticoes that Bologna is famous for stretching out in every direction. It’s a 4-star place with solid 8-out-of-10 ratings, and honestly, I can see why – there’s something refreshingly authentic about staying right in the thick of things rather than in some sterile hotel district.
The building itself has that classic Bolognese charm – you can tell it’s been thoughtfully renovated without losing its character. The rooms are well-appointed (though if you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack earplugs since Via Zamboni can get lively, especially Thursday through Saturday nights when the students are out). What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood – they didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map but gave me specific recommendations like which osteria has the best tortellini en brodo and warned me that the nearby Piazza Verdi gets pretty crowded during aperitivo hour. The hotel’s position means you’re literally a 5-minute walk from the Two Towers – I mean, you can see the Asinelli Tower from some of the upper floor windows – and you’re perfectly positioned to explore the university area, which most tourists rush through but is actually where you’ll find the best local spots.
Here’s the thing though – staying at San Donato isn’t just about having a nice room (which it is), it’s about being part of Bologna’s daily rhythm. In the morning, you’ll hear the city waking up around you – the coffee machines firing up at the bar downstairs, the gentle hum of Vespas navigating the narrow streets, students chatting in a dozen different languages. The hotel manages to feel both comfortable and authentically local, which is honestly pretty rare these days. Sure, if you want complete quiet or a big pool or whatever, maybe look elsewhere, but if you want to actually experience Bologna rather than just visit it – well, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better base. Plus, the train station is close enough that you don’t need to stress about catching early trains to Florence or Venice, but far enough that you’re not dealing with that whole tourist-transit-hub vibe. It’s just a really solid choice that puts you exactly where you want to be.

Reviews of Hotel San Donato – Bologna centro
Enjoyed the roof terraces and the city view – Sonja from Finland – 16 July 2025 (9/10)
Beautiful old building, roof terraces were really nice, awesome city view and peaceful atmosphere. My room had also balcony, which was a happy surprise. Breakfast was ok too.
What could be improved: The central location was good, but since the hotel is in the middle of the most hectic tourist area of the city, the surroundings are quite packed with people.Comfortable, well located, good value – Alfred from Australia – 12 July 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: Maybe make the door for parking more visible with a plaque
Hotel Bar?The proximity of the hotel to the centre made up for the shortcomings of the room. – Josh from Australia – 26 June 2025 (7/10)
The location was exceptional within walking distance of all major sights, bars and restaurants.
What could be improved: The room was small and the shower cubicle was even smaller. Some would say that you had to be a contortionist to fit it.Convenient location; comfortable room – Elizabeth from United States – 20 June 2025 (7/10)
Excellent location. Our room had a nice view and was spacious.
What could be improved: The view came with a lot of steeet noise. There is a bar downstairs and it was going full tilt on a Saturday night until 1 am. Other rooms may be quieter. Also, there seemed to be a thermostat with an A/C setting, but there was no appreciable cooling, so we had to crack the window for air, which made the noise worse. In colder months, this presumably wouldn’t be a problem.Great location, wonderful staff, stylish rooms – Nicoletta from United States – 17 June 2025 (8/10)
The location is fantastic, my room was small but elegant and functional. All the staff was kind and helpful. Thank you!
What could be improved: The internal ramps to access my room with two trollies were very steep and I couldn’t use them: I didn’t want to stumble! Please work on a more convenient solution. The best experience if you visit downtown Bologna – Jose from Spain – 13 June 2025 (9/10)
Unique terrace experience in Second Floor, in the morning on Summer.
Nice 100% Dark to sleep well, with double pillow
What could be improved: Some old furniture, maybe great for othersNice well located hotel with a terrace with wonderful views. – Aythami from United Kingdom – 9 June 2025 (8/10)
Location and the beautiful terrace.
What could be improved: The price for a single bed was really high, it was a birthday stay so they could offer an upgrade to a double bedroom at least.
