Instead, it’s got warm wood and local artwork that actually looks like someone chose it, not just grabbed it from a catalog.

The location is pretty genius, actually. You’re right by Porta San Mamolo (obviously), which most tourists skip but locals use as a shortcut to the hills. If you’re into morning runs or evening walks, the path up to San Luca starts practically at your doorstep – though fair warning, it’s steep enough to humble you quickly. What I really loved was being able to walk to the university area in about ten minutes, which means you get all these great little bars and trattorias that cater to students and professors, not just tourists. There’s this osteria called Da Cesari just a few blocks away that serves the kind of tortellini en brodo that’ll ruin you for anywhere else. The staff at the hotel actually recommended it, which tells you something about how plugged in they are to the real Bologna.

Room-wise, it’s what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – nothing revolutionary, but everything works and feels considered. The beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms have proper water pressure, which… look, after a day of walking around medieval streets, you want a shower that doesn’t dribble. Some rooms face the vicolo, others look toward the back courtyard – honestly, both are quiet, though you might catch some early morning delivery trucks on the street side. The Wi-Fi’s reliable, there’s decent air conditioning (crucial in summer), and the windows actually open if you prefer fresh air. Check-in was smooth, no drama, and they held my bags after checkout so I could wander around Bologna for a few more hours without dragging my suitcase over cobblestones. Small thing, but it mattered. The 8.7 rating feels about right – it’s not going to change your life, but it’s the kind of place where everything just works, you sleep well, and you leave feeling like you stayed somewhere authentically Bolognese rather than generically Italian.

  Everything worked! It was updated, clean, comfortable. Modern scheme adapted to an old beautiful property. My room was quiet as I requested. I was at first given a room facing the windows of another property on the street. Thankfully, after talking to the manager, he was able to accommodate my original request and give me a garden view. The garden area was nice for breakfast.
  
  What could be improved: The rooms are small. Not a lot of natural light made its way into my room. The breakfast scrambled eggs were in kind a soup making me wonder if they were from a powder mix.
