Hotel Astoria Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Astoria on Via Fratelli Rosselli, you’ll notice it’s not trying too hard to impress — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. This three-star property sits in a handsome building that feels authentically Bolognese, without any flashy renovations that strip away character. The entrance is understated but welcoming, and you get the sense right away that this place prioritizes substance over show.

Prime Bologna Location

Here’s what I love about the location — you’re actually in the heart of Bologna without being stuck on some touristy strip. Via Fratelli Rosselli puts you within easy walking distance of Piazza Maggiore and the university district, but the street itself has that lived-in neighborhood feel where locals still outnumber visitors. You know what’s great? You can grab morning coffee at the corner bar like a regular, then be at the Two Towers in ten minutes. The train station is close enough that you won’t need a taxi, but far enough that you’re not dealing with that constant station noise.

The Room Experience

My room was exactly what you’d expect from a solid three-star in Italy — clean, functional, and sized for actual human beings (not American hotel standards, but perfectly reasonable). The furnishings lean traditional without feeling dated, and the bathroom was recently updated with decent water pressure. What surprised me was how quiet it stayed at night, considering we’re talking about a city center location. The air conditioning works well during Bologna’s sticky summers, which — trust me — you’ll appreciate.

Service and Atmosphere

The staff here actually knows the city, which makes a difference when you need dinner recommendations or directions to that specific osteria you read about. They’re not overly formal, but they’re genuinely helpful in that Italian way where they want you to experience their city properly. The lobby serves as an informal gathering spot where you’ll often find other travelers comparing notes about their day, and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that encourages these casual interactions rather than rushing everyone through.

Why Guests Love It

Look, Hotel Astoria isn’t going to wow you with a rooftop pool or a fancy spa, but it delivers exactly what most travelers actually need — a comfortable base in an excellent location with staff who care about your experience. Couples particularly seem to appreciate the intimate scale and the romantic potential of exploring Bologna on foot from here. The 7.6 rating reflects what I experienced: solid execution of the fundamentals without any major surprises, good or bad. For the price point and location, it’s honestly hard to argue with the value proposition. This three-star hotel represents an authentic Bologna experience that resonates with discerning travelers seeking genuine hospitality over quality accommodations.

Bologna’s hotels wrap guests in Renaissance art, rooftop lounges, and concierge-led Mortadella market tours.

Reviews of Hotel Astoria

  • Very good – Zahid from Italy – 11 July 2025 (8/10)

Cleanliness, Breakfast and staff was very friendly.

What could be improved: The water pressure in the shower was very low.

  • Very good – Yekira from Australia – 8 July 2025 (8/10)

The man at the front desk was very lovely and helpful – I checked in quite late and checked in early and he let me access to breakfast room early so I could pack myself a breakfast! The room itself was simple, but comfortable, and had everything I needed. It was very close to the main station which was great.

  • A Great stay. – Март from France – 1 June 2025 (9/10)

Breakfast was great. Room is nice and clean. The bed was great. The personnel very friendly. The garden was amazing to chill in evening.

  • Fine hotel, close from the central station and the old town – Stanislaw from Poland – 27 May 2025 (8/10)

Nice hotel within a short walk range from the central station and not far from the old town. A comfortable bed is definitely a plus, as well as quite varied breakfast selection.

What could be improved: Noisy bathroom ventilation and narrow breakfast space.

  • Impressive hotel – John from United Kingdom – 9 May 2025 (9/10)

Good location near the city centre and the railway station. Lovely big bed and very comfortable mattress meant an excellent nights sleep. Room was large and bathroom was smart. Breakfast much better than expected, even pancakes and a chocolate fountain.

What could be improved: No issues

  • Good – Γιωργος from Greece – 22 April 2025 (7/10)

Before booking, I read many reviews of hotels near the train station. Most of them seemed similar: impersonal staff who will help if needed though, and overpriced rooms that look good in photos but clearly need renovation.

This hotel is located a bit farther from the train station, which I consider an advantage, since the area right next to the station isn’t the best, especially at night.

One thing to note is that the hotel also has apartments, which don’t have great reviews, and some rooms located at the back on the ground or semi-basement level.

Apart from that, the distance to Piazza Maggiore is around 20 minutes on foot, but the walk is pleasant and doesn’t feel long. The hotel also offers free bicycles, a gym, and other amenities.

Housekeeping was daily, rooms were spacious, and the beds also. The breakfast buffet was rich, with a good variety of sweet and savory options, as well as drinks. To be honest, the breakfast buffet alone makes this hotel stand out from others in the area and somewhat justifies the price.

  • Good – Joseph from Malta – 31 March 2025 (9/10)

Good location to the centre & to the train station
Breakfast good but room a bit small
