You know what struck me first about HOLABOLOGNA? The name made me chuckle, but honestly, this place is way more sophisticated than its playful branding suggests. Tucked away on Via Donato Creti in the Savena district, it’s actually perfectly positioned if you want to experience Bologna like someone who lives here rather than just hitting the tourist trail. I mean, you’re about a 15-minute walk from the historic center, but you’re also right in this lovely residential area where locals actually hang out. There’s this fantastic little osteria around the corner that I stumbled upon purely by accident – the kind of place where the owner’s mother is still making tortellini by hand in the back.

The rooms themselves feel more like staying in a well-designed apartment than a typical hotel, which makes sense given they offer both rooms and flats. Everything’s been recently renovated with this clean, modern aesthetic that somehow doesn’t feel sterile. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathrooms have those rainfall showers that actually work properly – you’d be surprised how often hotels mess that up. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical details: plenty of outlets near the bed, blackout curtains that actually block light, and – this is huge – excellent Wi-Fi throughout. The kitchenette in the flat I stayed in was fully functional too, not just for show, which came in handy after visiting the Mercato delle Erbe and wanting to try cooking with some local ingredients.

The neighborhood itself is where this place really shines. You’re on a quiet residential street, so you’ll actually sleep well (Bologna can get surprisingly noisy in the centro), but you’re also a quick bus ride or pleasant walk to everywhere you want to be. The 14 bus stops practically outside and takes you straight to the train station, which saved me a fortune on taxis. Plus, there’s legitimate parking nearby if you’re brave enough to drive in Italy – something that’s nearly impossible to find in the old town. The staff clearly knows the area well; they pointed me toward this incredible gelato place on Via San Vitale that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me the inside scoop on which aperitivo spots actually cater to locals rather than tourists. At this price point and with that 8.6 rating, you’re getting serious value – especially considering comparable places in the historic center cost twice as much and half the time you’re dealing with centuries-old buildings where the shower pressure is more of a gentle suggestion than actual water flow.

  Staff very friendly and easy to communicate with. Instructions provided were easy to follow and the taxi service to the airport was exceptional.
  Our baby had a lovely cot prepared and every detail was thought carefully. There is a big supermarket right outside and the train station is at 15 min walking from the property.

  What could be improved: The property is located on the 6th floor and there is a lift, but you need to go up some stairs to get to it (about 10 steps), that was challenging with a hold luggage and a pushchair.
