You know what surprised me about the Hilton Garden Inn Bologna North? It’s actually one of those places where being slightly outside the historic center works in your favor. I mean, sure, you’re not stumbling out your door onto Piazza Maggiore, but honestly – the peace and quiet at night is worth the quick bus ride into town, and the 35 bus stops practically at the hotel entrance anyway.

The location on Via San Donato is pretty clever when you think about it. You’re close enough to the ring road that getting to the airport or train station is painless (no wrestling with luggage through those narrow medieval streets), but far enough out that you actually get a decent night’s sleep. The rooms have this solid, unfussy vibe – nothing too fancy, but the beds are genuinely comfortable and the air conditioning actually works, which… let’s be honest, isn’t always a given in Italian hotels during summer. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays even though you’re near a main road. Good windows, I guess.

The staff here gets Bologna, if that makes sense. They’ll tell you to skip the touristy restaurants near the Two Towers and point you toward places like Osteria del Sole instead – you know, the one where you bring your own food and they provide the wine and atmosphere. Little touches like that make a difference. The breakfast is solid too, though I’d still sneak out for a proper cappuccino at the bar down the street at least once (because when in Bologna, right?). The hotel restaurant is surprisingly decent for dinner if you’re too tired to venture out, but honestly, you’re missing the point if you don’t explore the food scene here.

Parking is included, which is huge – anyone who’s tried to park in Bologna’s center knows what a nightmare that can be. And here’s something I only figured out on my second stay: the hotel shuttle can drop you right at the train station, which is perfect if you’re doing day trips to Florence or Venice. The whole setup just works well for people who want to explore the region without the chaos of staying right in the thick of things. It’s got that reliable Hilton feel without being sterile, and the 8.5 rating honestly feels about right – not life-changing, but solid and smart for what Bologna offers.

  The Hotel has recently had a full and very well done renovation. Rooms and Public areas were finished and fitted to a very high standard. Reception, Restaurant and Bar Staff were all Professional and helpful. Restaurant evening meal was excellent. Didn't have breakfast as we were leaving too early to take advantage. Reception also very kindly stored one suitcase for us, whilst we did a 2 night trip to Rome.
  Ignore Google Street view, we stayed twice, either side of a couple of nights in Rome and would happily stay again. Fantastic value for money and Highly Recommended.

  A big surprise. Very nice new modern hotel in north Bologne suburb. Nice room, very good bed, nice big bathroom. Only trouble is you need a car to get the 4 miles into town.
