Central City Rooms Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Central City Rooms? The name makes it sound like some generic business hotel, but honestly, this place has way more character than I expected. It’s tucked away on via Barozzi – and I mean really tucked away, like you’ll probably walk past it the first time because it’s on this quiet residential street that doesn’t scream “hotel zone.” But that’s actually part of its charm.
The location is pretty brilliant once you figure out the neighborhood. You’re basically a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, which means you can stumble back after dinner at one of those late-night osterias without dealing with taxis or trying to navigate Bologna’s maze-like centro storico when you’re slightly wine-drunk. I stayed here during the shoulder season in October, and mornings were lovely – you step out onto via Barozzi and it’s just locals heading to work, maybe some students from the university area nearby. No tourist crowds at your doorstep, which is refreshing.
The rooms themselves feel… well, they feel like someone actually thought about what travelers need instead of just checking boxes. Mine had this great reading nook by the window – not huge, but perfectly sized for morning coffee while watching the street wake up. The bed was legitimately comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually works properly. Small detail, but the lighting was warm and adjustable, not those harsh fluorescents that make you look like you’re in a hospital. The 4-star rating feels right – it’s polished without being stuffy, modern without losing that distinctly Italian warmth.
What really sold me was how the staff handled things. Check-in was smooth, but more importantly, they knew their stuff about the area. When I asked about good spots for aperitivo that weren’t tourist traps, the guy at the desk immediately mentioned this little place on via del Pratello that ended up being perfect. They also sorted out restaurant reservations without making it feel like a big production – just effortless local knowledge that made my stay better.
The 8.3 rating makes sense to me. It’s not trying to be the flashiest place in Bologna, but it nails the fundamentals while giving you that insider’s access to the city. The building itself has some age to it – you’ll hear the occasional footstep from upstairs, and the elevator is charmingly old-school – but that’s Bologna for you. If you want sterile perfection, stay at a chain hotel near the train station. If you want to feel like you’re actually in Italy, staying somewhere that locals would recommend to their friends, Central City Rooms gets it right.

Good – Kryštof from Czech Republic – 2 November 2024 (7/10)
Location.
What could be improved: You can easily hear everything from neighbours.Very good – Yasemin from Turkey – 18 July 2024 (8/10)
Clean and comfortable
What could be improved: LocationReasonably priced option in Bologna – Dana from Czech Republic – 18 May 2024 (8/10)
Small, clean and quiet room (no street or train noise). We stayed for a couple of nights only. The room has everything you need for a few nights' stay.
What could be improved: This is not a hotel – but someone turned 1 apartment into 2 rooms with a shared kitchen area / entrance so it can be noisy as you can hear your neighbors. The area around the hotel is ok.. (close to a train and bus station) but I would probably not recommend this location to single travelers. On the other hand it's ~10 mins walk to the centre of Bologna.Nice place to stay im Bologn – Tugba from Turkey – 6 May 2024 (9/10)
It’s very clean and silent flat. 20 min away from main square (Piazza Maggiore), but very close to train station.
Superb – Yy from United Kingdom – 31 October 2023 (9/10)
Very well protected
What could be improved: The bathroom was not in the room but next to it.Very good – Maria from Australia – 9 September 2023 (8/10)
Cristina is absolutely lovely! The room was comfortable, clean and had a really nice bathroom. The beds were also quite comfortable. The location was close to Bologna Centrale train station and an easy walk to the historical part of Bologna.
What could be improved: The area felt a little seedy at nightVery good – Anita from Australia – 6 September 2023 (8/10)
clean room, super close to the station, beautiful city, friendly host
What could be improved: if the doors can lock from inside would be more convenient especially the external bathroom. having to use the keys to lock it every time wasn't convenientComfortable stay in a nice apartment with very helpful and attentive owners. Would recommend! – David from United Kingdom – 14 August 2023 (8/10)
A short walk from the train station, clean and well equipped. The owners were very friendly, helpful and flexible.
What could be improved: The city tax requirement could be made clearer. The neighbourhood isn’t ‘unsafe’, but wouldn’t recommend walking back very late at night.Cosy and well located. If you plan to do Remote Work, expect some noise from upstair neighbours. – Iarly from Germany – 28 July 2023 (8/10)
What could be improved: It is possible to hear every step coming from neighbours above, as well as kids might be running all day long.
