The beds are properly comfortable (not those rock-hard European mattresses you sometimes get), and honestly, the shower pressure is better than what I have at home. Small thing, but it matters when you’ve been walking around Bologna’s cobblestones all day.

What really sets this place apart though is the staff’s local knowledge. I mean, sure, they’ll tell you about the obvious spots, but they also know which osteria actually serves the best tortellini (hint: it’s not the one with tourists lined up outside) and when to hit the Mercato delle Erbe before it gets crazy. The woman at the front desk – I think her name was Giulia – gave me this perfect route through the porticoes that I never would have found on my own. And parking, since everyone asks about that in Bologna – they can sort you out with a spot that’s not going to cost you a fortune, which is basically a miracle in this city.

The whole vibe here is relaxed but professional. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything just… works. The WiFi is solid (tested it on multiple video calls), the air conditioning actually cools the room, and the breakfast hits that sweet spot between having enough variety and not being an overwhelming buffet situation. I particularly loved their local pastries – clearly sourced from somewhere good, not just generic hotel fare.

Look, Bologna isn’t exactly short on places to stay, but Casa San Martino Stays feels like it was designed by people who actually travel and know what’s annoying about hotels. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in for a few days and feel like you’re staying somewhere that gets the balance right between comfort and authenticity. Plus, with a 9.1 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’re onto something special here.
