Casa dell’Auriga by Wonderful Italy Overview

You know what struck me first about Casa dell’Auriga? The building itself – it’s tucked into this elegant stretch of Via D’Azeglio where the old Bologna really shows off. I mean, you’re literally a three-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but somehow you’ve escaped all that tourist chaos. The street has this lovely residential feel, with locals heading to the morning market and that authentic Italian rhythm you can’t fake. When I walked in, honestly, the lobby felt more like stepping into a well-appointed friend’s apartment than a hotel – there’s this warm, lived-in sophistication that immediately makes sense for Bologna.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star, but it’s the thoughtful touches that get you. The windows actually open (thank god), and if you’re on the upper floors, you’ll catch glimpses of those iconic red rooftops that make Bologna so photogenic. The beds are properly comfortable – not too soft, not too firm – and the bathrooms have that Italian marble thing going on without being overly flashy. What I really appreciated was the soundproofing; Via D’Azeglio can get a bit lively in the evenings, especially when university students are out, but inside it’s genuinely quiet. The staff… well, they’re that perfect mix of professional and actually helpful. They’ll recommend restaurants that locals go to, not just the obvious tourist spots, and they seem to genuinely care about whether you’re enjoying Bologna.

Location-wise, this place is honestly brilliant if you want to experience the city properly. You’re close enough to walk everywhere that matters – the university district, the food markets, those incredible little osterie hidden down side streets – but far enough from the main drags that you’re not fighting crowds every time you leave the hotel. There’s a fantastic caffè literally next door where I grabbed my morning espresso (the owner knows everyone in the neighborhood), and the whole area comes alive in the evenings with that relaxed Italian social scene. Parking can be tricky, as it is everywhere in Bologna’s center, but the hotel can sort you out with nearby options. The 8.7 rating makes complete sense to me – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it nails what you actually want: comfort, character, and a genuine sense of place. If you’re looking for that authentic Bologna experience without sacrificing comfort, Casa dell’Auriga delivers exactly that.

Reviews of Casa dell’Auriga by Wonderful Italy

  • Very good – Vanda from Italy – 17 June 2025 (8/10)

Sicuramente la posizione, centralissima e tutto a due passi.
    Camere molto grandi e caratteristiche.

    What could be improved: Nulla

  • Superb – Carlo from Italy – 20 May 2025 (9/10)

bella casa e ottima posizione, davvero centralissima. Ottimo check in.

  • Zentral mit historischem Touch! – Pascal from Switzerland – 5 May 2025 (10/10)

Top Lage, fantastisches Interieur und super Host

What could be improved: Ein zweites Schlüsselset wäre wünschenswert.

  • Superb – Rosa from Spain – 3 April 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: The apartment is stunning and both rooms are! So this are only two tiny bits of feedback: it's a bit dusty under the beds, but other than that perfect. The living room could be improved: the sofa is not comfortable, since it's a sofà bed and you could not sit properly. The living room has enough space for another sofa.

  • Good location to visit Bologna – Renata from Brazil – 6 March 2025 (8/10)

Location is the best! You can walk around the city center.

What could be improved: Although they have a nice kitchen it doesn’t have enough utensils and utilities for a breakfast or a quick meal ( coffee maker for example!)

  • Great space and location – James from Australia – 1 March 2025 (9/10)

    Spacious and well located

What could be improved: Pull out sofa should really be replaced

  • Fabulous location if you are want a 2/3 stay in Bologna to see the sites. – Antony from United Kingdom – 18 September 2024 (8/10)

Great location very traditional rooms and a good price.

What could be improved: Nothing. Good value for the price.

  • Very pleasant apartment in a safe but busy location – Chris from United Kingdom – 23 July 2024 (8/10)

We received a very warm welcome from our Wonderful Italy representative. It was in a very central location but felt authentic Italian. Bustling city night life a very short walk away. Lots of sightseeing opportunities and a good base to visit the Venice by short train journey.

What could be improved: Air con was good in central living space but didn’t affect the temperature in the other two rooms enough to feel cool but they were cooler by a few degrees .

  • Great location but persistent heating and hot water problems – Walsworth from United Kingdom – 9 December 2023 (3/10)

Great location and beautiful property. Collection of keys easy to arrange.

What could be improved: As a previous guest mentioned issues with heating and hot water during their stay, I emailed the host to check that this would be fixed, especially with it being December. I was assured it was. We had no hot water or heating for our first night and following morning. Similarly to the previous review, as we wanted to make the best of it (we were only staying 2 nights) we topped up the boiler to ensure we had hot water. We had to do this every time we wanted a shower. I do feel that I was mislead regarding the working order of the property. The €20 compensation we have been offered shows disrespect to their customers.

  • Satisfactory – Gerards from Turkey – 22 November 2023 (7/10)

The location of the flat is fantastic, just steps away from Piazza Maggiore, in a historic building with beautiful high ceilings and fresco painting in one of the rooms. The place is semi renovated – a good modernized kitchen and bathroom, and the decoration is tasteful, with some old book cases as in the photos. Our host Luciano was great and helpful at check in and throughout our stay. All in all a satisfactory stay for us as family.

What could be improved: The place could have been cleaner. Just in general floors and carpets did not look very clean. There was a problem with the heater, and water pressure kept dropping, so we learned to pump water and get it hot again. Also the dishwasher was not working. As our stay was not very long, only 3 days, we did manage-but for the future obviously these issues have to be resolved.
