Casa Cielo Universitas Overview

You know what struck me first about Casa Cielo Universitas? The name actually makes sense when you see it – this converted palazzo really does feel like it’s reaching toward the sky, especially when you’re up in one of the higher rooms looking out over Bologna’s terracotta rooftops. I mean, Via dell’Unione isn’t exactly a household name unless you know Bologna well, but it’s honestly one of those perfect locations where you’re close enough to everything without being right in the tourist chaos. You can walk to Piazza Maggiore in about eight minutes (I timed it), but you’re tucked away enough that you’re not hearing drunk students stumbling back from the bars at 2 AM.

The place has this interesting thing going on where it feels genuinely Italian – not the fake rustic stuff you see everywhere – but with modern touches that actually work. The lobby has these beautiful original frescoed ceilings, and honestly, I spent way too much time just staring up at them during check-in. The staff clearly knows their stuff about the city; the guy at the front desk gave me this detailed rundown of which osteria to hit for the best tortellini (spoiler: it wasn’t the obvious touristy one), and he was absolutely right. What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole university district thing – Bologna’s crawling with students, obviously, but this place attracts a mix of business travelers and tourists who want something more sophisticated than a hostel but not as stuffy as the big chain hotels.

The rooms are well thought out in that Italian way where space is precious but nothing feels cramped. Mine had these gorgeous wooden shutters that actually blocked out the light (rare in Europe, let me tell you), and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious. I will say the elevators are tiny – very European – so if you’re traveling with massive suitcases, be prepared for some creative maneuvering. The breakfast spread is solid, not mind-blowing, but they do proper Italian coffee and the pastries are clearly from a local bakery, not some industrial supplier. One small thing that made a difference: they have this little courtyard area where you can sit with your morning espresso, and it’s just… peaceful. You can hear the city waking up, but it’s not overwhelming.

Here’s the thing about staying here – you’re not just getting a bed in Bologna, you’re getting a base that actually enhances your experience of the city. The university district has this incredible energy, especially in the evening when the porticoes fill up with people heading out for aperitivo, and being right in the middle of it means you can be spontaneous about where you eat or grab drinks. Plus, if you’re here for business or visiting the university, you’re literally surrounded by everything you need. The 8.9 rating feels about right – it’s not going to change your life, but it’s exactly what you want from a good Italian hotel: authentic, comfortable, and run by people who actually care about your experience.

Reviews of Casa Cielo Universitas

  • A lovely apartment, just one or two minor issues. – Susan from United Kingdom – 28 May 2025 (8/10)

The apartment was great, the kitchen was very well equipped and clean and the bed was very comfortable. It was also very convenient for the old town sights.

What could be improved: I would have given it five stars except for two things. Firstly I didn’t get any check-in instructions through Booking.com because there was no facility to register my stay as a single person, (only 2 or more people). I did flag this up with the owner via the messaging system, but it meant that I did not receive any joining/access instructions to the property. Fortunately when I got there the owner responded to a phone call from me very promptly and it was all fine. However it was an anxious moment.
Secondly there was some noise in the street outside from students both nights until quite late -1.30 am. Fortunately the apartment is on the third floor so this was not too much of a problem. Otherwise it was very quiet indeed and a lovely apartment.

  • Very good – Lina from Germany – 21 March 2025 (8/10)

Easy self-check-in. The host responds quickly. Lively location in the student quarter, within walking distance of the city center. The apartment has everything needed for a short stay.

What could be improved: However, it can be quite loud due to student parties in the same building. The hot water takes a while to heat up, and the mattress is a bit too soft for my preference.

  • Exceptional – Elisa from Austria – 25 November 2024 (10/10)

Really nice apartment in the heart of Bologna. New and clean, it looks exactly like in the pictures.

  • Pleasant. – Andrada from Romania – 20 September 2024 (9/10)

The location was amazing, right near the university and you could feel the vibrational student life.

What could be improved: It was not as clean as I expected and the fact that it is located in a bloc of residents was stressful when we arrived because we had to call each number hopefully for someone to open the frond door for us.

  • Great! – Matea from Australia – 4 July 2024 (10/10)

Was a great property, had everything we needed, clean and a good location!

  • If I come to Bologna I will rent this house again. – Kiymet from Turkey – 31 October 2023 (10/10)

It was so clean and comfortable. The location might be far away from train station but there are many bus for it. It is also close to the restaurants.

  • Very good – Kai from Netherlands – 17 October 2023 (8/10)

New and royal accomodation, very nice and friendly host!

What could be improved: Bed very soft. The location is just outside the main street, would not recommend for woman's alone people hanging around and my girlfriend didn't felt comfortable.

  • Superb – Moritz from Germany – 7 October 2023 (9/10)

Nice cozy apartment next to the city center

  • Highly recommended studio apt. close to everything – Tina from Denmark – 12 September 2023 (8/10)

The studio apt. is close to everything. The place was very clean

What could be improved: Noise from the street during the night from trucks

  • Great, we enjoy. Thank you! – Sini from Finland – 26 July 2023 (10/10)

The location was excellent, near everything, quiet location and the apartment was clean. The service was perfect. Air conditioning worked well and everything you need in the apartment.

What could be improved: It would be good to have hand soap and dishwashing liquid.
