Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Bologna, and Borgo De Chiari is one of those spots that just gets it right. Tucked away on Via de’ Chiari – which honestly, most tourists never find because it’s this quiet little street just off the main action – you’re literally a three-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore but somehow completely removed from all the chaos. You know what I mean? It’s like finding that perfect table at a restaurant where you can people-watch without being in the middle of everything.

The building itself has this understated elegance that feels very Bologna – none of that flashy tourist hotel nonsense. When you walk in, there’s this subtle smell of old wood and something that might be lavender, and the lobby has these beautiful terracotta floors that probably date back centuries. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which… well, that’s rare these days. I mean, the 9.3 rating makes sense when you experience how smoothly everything runs. Check-in was effortless, and they had genuine recommendations for places to eat that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps. They sent me to this little osteria around the corner where I had the best tortellini in brodo of my entire trip.

What really sold me on this place was the attention to small details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms are quiet – and I mean properly quiet, not “quiet for a city center” quiet. The walls are thick enough that you’re not hearing every conversation in the hallway, and the windows face away from the main street so you’re not dealing with scooters revving at 7 AM. The beds are firm but not aggressively so, and they’ve got these heavy curtains that actually block out light if you need to sleep in. Plus, the shower pressure is excellent – honestly one of the best I’ve experienced in Italian hotels, where that can be… let’s say inconsistent.

The location is what really makes this place special, though. You’re positioned perfectly to explore the university quarter on foot, and the morning walk to get coffee at Zanarini takes you through some of the most beautiful porticoed streets in the city. Via de’ Chiari connects to all these little medieval lanes that most visitors miss entirely. It’s close enough to the train station that you can walk with luggage if you pack reasonably, but far enough that you feel like you’re in the heart of historic Bologna. During truffle season in fall, there’s actually a little market that sets up just two blocks away – the kind of local thing you’d never know about unless you were staying in this exact neighborhood.

Is it perfect? Well, the elevator is one of those charming European ones that fits about 1.5 people, so if you’re traveling with big groups or lots of luggage, you might be taking the stairs. But honestly, that’s part of the charm. This isn’t some generic business hotel – it’s a place that feels connected to the city around it, run by people who clearly care about what they’re doing. For a four-star place, it punches way above its weight.

  L’appartamento è davvero un gioiellino. Di dimensioni ridotte ma ideale per soggiorni brevi e per una coppia. La posizione è assolutamente perfetta! Centralissima e a pochissimi minuti a piedi dalle principali piazze e vie di Bologna. Silenziosissima e perfetta in ogni dettaglio.
