Bologna Central Apartments – Indipendenza 36 Overview

You know what struck me first about Bologna Central Apartments? The building itself has this gorgeous old-world charm that you just don’t get with modern hotels – I mean, you’re right on Via dell’Indipendenza, which is basically Bologna’s main artery, but somehow the apartments feel like a peaceful retreat from all the action. The location is honestly perfect if you want to actually experience the city rather than just pass through it. You can walk to Piazza Maggiore in maybe ten minutes, and there’s this fantastic little osteria called Da Bertino just around the corner that the locals pack into every night (trust me on this one). The train station is close enough that you won’t be dragging your luggage across half the city, but far enough that you’re not dealing with that constant tourist chaos.

What really sets this place apart – and I’ve stayed in a lot of apartments across Italy – is how they’ve managed to keep the authentic Italian apartment feel while actually making everything work properly. The kitchenettes aren’t just for show; they’re properly equipped, which is rare in these converted buildings. I actually cooked a few meals using ingredients from the Mercato delle Erbe, which is this incredible covered market about a fifteen-minute walk away. The apartments themselves feel spacious compared to typical Bologna accommodations, and honestly, given how tight space is in the city center, that’s saying something. The Wi-Fi is solid (I work remotely, so this matters), and the air conditioning actually keeps up with those sweltering July afternoons when the city turns into an oven.

The neighborhood vibe is what really sold me, though. You’re surrounded by actual Bolognese life – there’s a great café downstairs where the owner, Mario, makes probably the best cappuccino on the street, and you’ll start recognizing the same faces doing their morning routines. Via dell’Indipendenza gets busy during the day with shoppers and students heading to the university area, but it settles into this lovely evening rhythm where people are just out enjoying themselves. The only thing to know is that weekends can get a bit lively since you’re so central – not obnoxiously loud, but you’ll hear the city humming below. Parking is… well, it’s Bologna, so forget about driving unless you absolutely have to. But honestly, everything you need is within walking distance anyway. The 8.4 rating makes sense; it’s not trying to be a luxury hotel, but it nails what it is: a really solid, authentic base for exploring one of Italy’s most underrated cities.

Reviews of Bologna Central Apartments – Indipendenza 36

  • Very good – Alica from Spain – 11 June 2025 (8/10)

The location is a nice and clean apartment.

What could be improved: The noise as its above a bar on very busy street. It's also quite dark. But it's ok for short stay.

  • Great location, few extras would have been nice tea/coffee milk. Extra pillows would have been great and a later ch – David-adrianna from Australia – 30 May 2024 (9/10)

We loved the location, very walkable to everywhere. Good space for a studio apartment.

What could be improved: Having to pick up the keys in another location. Very annoying when you have been travelling all day and just want to get in and have a cuppa and some rest.

  • Good location in downtown Bologna, average apartment, noise can be an issue. – Petros from Greece – 10 May 2024 (7/10)

    – the location is great, right on Indipendenza street, a few minutes on foot from Piazza Maggiore. There are several stores and a supermarket nearby, a nice bakery, etc.. The street is turned into a pedestrian walk on Sundays.
    – the room is relatively spacious (3 people can sleep) and the bathroom is quite nice (the photos probably show the bathroom prior to the decoration, so it is a lot better now)
    – Communication was good with the owners
    – Wi-fi signal and speed was good.
Overall, it's an OK choice (not sure if it's good value for money), but I think the pictures are very zoomed-in and one cannot get a good idea about the room size and structure and what to expect really. Noise can be an issue if you're a light sleeper.

What could be improved: – Quite noisy: Bologna is indeed noisy and despite the fact that the windows work well for soundproofing, there is still a lot of noise coming in esp. from the cafe downstairs (working morning to around 22:00 but there is a lot of noise when packing up the place till around midnight and starting early in the morning). Personally I would not be able to sleep with an open window in the summer here.
    – the room furnishing and decoration is quite basic – it looks and feels like a student room.
    – The kitchen and bathroom are renovated but the rest of the apartment could use some renovation too.
    – the balcony is very narrow – it is practically a window and you're inside the portico so there is limited light – the main light is quite dim too.

  • Excellent value and a great place to stay – Cathryn from United Kingdom – 4 August 2023 (8/10)

Fantastic location – right at the heart of it all but surprisingly quiet at night, with the windows shut we slept very well. Really nice apartment!

What could be improved: Getting the keys was tricky as we didn’t have mobile reception (thanks Brexit) but once we were able to log on, it was easy.

  • Very good – Marika from Malta – 12 July 2023 (8/10)

    Very good location.

  • Excellent spot – Anthony from United Kingdom – 7 July 2023 (9/10)

The location is superb, close to the tourist attractions and right in the middle of various bars, restaurants and shopping.
On top of that the apartment is neat and tidy, very clean and quite stylish.

  • Superb – Giosar70 from Greece – 29 June 2023 (9/10)

Excellent location. Modern and clean appointment fully equipped and very gentle administration/owner

What could be improved: Everything was OK. Maybe some hooks in the bathroom for the towels

  • Superb – Rbadea from Romania – 25 June 2023 (9/10)

Good location, the check-in is very easy, comfortable bed.

  • Good – Vee from United Kingdom – 6 June 2023 (7/10)

    There was no breakfast

  • Superb – Adriana from Spain – 20 December 2022 (9/10)

The apartment was right in the center, super clean and brand new. The heating was working and it was really comfortable to stay there.

What could be improved: A bit noisy at night and curtains weren't completely blacked out. Also we couldn't leave the bag in the check in office for a couple of ours.
