Arpa Apartments Bologna Center Overview

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from the name “Arpa Apartments” – honestly sounds a bit bland – but this place on Via San Petronio Vecchio completely surprised me. The location is just… well, it’s actually perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without dealing with the tourist chaos around Piazza Maggiore. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Basilica di San Petronio, but tucked away on this quieter street where you can actually hear yourself think.

The apartments themselves feel more like staying in a friend’s well-appointed flat than a typical hotel room. I mean, the kitchenette wasn’t just for show – it had everything I needed to make proper coffee in the morning (and trust me, I’m picky about my espresso). The beds were comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up cursing my life choices, and the bathrooms had that nice rainfall shower head that made me linger longer than I should have. What I really appreciated was how they managed to keep the old Bologna character – you know, those beautiful high ceilings and original architectural details – while making everything feel fresh and modern. The Wi-Fi actually worked everywhere, which honestly is rarer than it should be in these historic buildings.

Here’s the thing about this neighborhood that most people don’t realize: you’re right in the heart of where actual Bolognese people live and work. There’s this fantastic little osteria called Al Cambio just around the corner that I stumbled into on my second night – barely any tourists, just locals arguing about football over incredible tortellini. And if you walk five minutes toward Via del Pratello, you hit this strip of bars and cafes that comes alive around aperitivo time. The morning routine was my favorite part though – stepping out to grab cornetti from the bakery on Via San Petronio Vecchio while the city was still waking up, then wandering through the Quadrilatero market before the crowds arrived.

The only minor complaint I’d have is that the street can get a bit echoey at night when people are heading home from dinner – not terrible, but light sleepers might want to pack earplugs. Check-in was smooth, and the staff actually gave me useful recommendations instead of just handing over a generic tourist map. They told me about this hidden courtyard behind the Biblioteca Salaborsa where you can sit and people-watch, which became my go-to spot for afternoon breaks. Honestly, for the price point and the location, you’re getting way more space and character than you’d find in a traditional hotel. Plus there’s something satisfying about having your own little Bologna base – somewhere you can dump your shopping bags from the market and plan your next move over a glass of Sangiovese.

Very nice place with all the facilities I needed. Good location at walking distance from the city centre. Friendly host. I felt very welcome. 🙂

What could be improved: A few times noisy neighbours when they came back at night, but this is unavoidable in a place like this.

  • We had a good stay, but it was not as nice as the description. – Robert from United States – 18 September 2022 (7/10)

The location in relation to the old city is great. The bed was very comfortable.

What could be improved: The apartment is on the ground floor so it was dark due to having to keep the curtains closed much of the time. The apartment has a musty, moldy smell emanating from the bathroom. It is also a 31 minute walk from the Bologna Central train station.
