Appartamento San Martino by Wonderful Italy Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Appartamento San Martino? The fact that it’s literally sitting on one of Bologna’s most charming squares, but somehow it doesn’t feel touristy at all. I mean, Piazza San Martino is this lovely little pocket that most visitors walk right past on their way to the bigger attractions – which honestly works in your favor if you’re staying here.

The apartment itself has that lived-in Italian elegance that’s hard to fake. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was how the morning light hits those traditional shutters just right, and there’s this subtle smell of old wood and espresso that seems to drift up from the café downstairs. The space feels authentic – not like someone tried to recreate “Italian charm” but like you’re actually borrowing someone’s well-loved Bologna home for a few days. The kitchen is properly equipped too, which matters if you’re planning to hit the morning markets at Mercato delle Erbe (it’s about a seven-minute walk, and trust me, you’ll want to cook some of that produce). The 4-star rating feels spot-on – it’s polished and comfortable without being sterile.

What really sold me on this place was the location intelligence. You’re tucked away enough that you won’t hear the evening crowds heading to the university district, but Via del Pratello – where all the good aperitivo spots are – is practically around the corner. And here’s something the booking sites don’t tell you: the building entrance is set back from the main pedestrian flow, so you can actually sit by your window in the evening without feeling like you’re in a fishbowl. Parking is the usual Bologna nightmare, but there’s a decent garage about three blocks away on Via Riva di Reno if you’re driving. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that “meet at a random café with a key” nonsense you sometimes get with apartment rentals. The Wonderful Italy folks clearly have their systems down. I’d say the 8.7 rating is probably right – it’s genuinely good without being perfect. The WiFi can be a bit spotty in the bedroom, and the shower pressure is… well, it’s Italy, you know? But honestly, when you’re staying somewhere that lets you feel like a temporary local rather than a tourist, those little things don’t matter much.

Reviews of Appartamento San Martino by Wonderful Italy

  • Superb – Julie from Germany – 7 July 2025 (9/10)

Great location. A/C in living room and bedroom. Very useful during the heatwave. The local agent was friendly and let me check in a few hours early for no charge.

What could be improved: I don‘t like shower curtains.. but that‘s about the only quibble about the flat itself. It is a few flights of stairs up. But fine for me. The one downside was not getting messages answered by the back office staff and getting contradictory information (from what agent had advised) about checking out etc..

  • Great choice for accommodation. – Mete from United States – 19 May 2025 (9/10)

Well kept apartment in a very centrally located historic building.

What could be improved: Climbing three floors can be difficult for some but good exercise after all the good food and drinks.

  • Good location, nice apartment in historic building – Abigail from United States – 11 May 2025 (8/10)

    Location, decor

What could be improved: They could have presented information about the place or info that they needed from us in a more organized manner. For example, we had to request set of sheets for sofa bed but I had no way of knowing ahead of time.

  • We had a pleasant time, The place is in the city center. It is clean, well decorated. – Ivanka from Bulgaria – 25 February 2025 (9/10)

The property is in the city center. You can walk to all the city landmarks, to many restaurants, shops. The place is decorated with charm and warmness.
    The hosts were helpful.

What could be improved: The only "minus" is the early bells ringing of the church nearby.

  • Great comfy and central location – Dan from Romania – 24 November 2024 (10/10)

The location of the apartment is perfect, close to restaurants, stores, tourists attractions.
The apartment is huge and you have some good views over the roofs, is well equipped to live in it.

What could be improved: It is near a church so at 8:30 prepare for some bells.
Another downside is the access with a heavy or large suitcase, considering there are a lot of stairs and no ramp or elevator, for me it was fine but for others could be more challenging.

  • Superb – Inna from Latvia – 5 November 2024 (9/10)

Everything was really cool. Great location and wonderful windows view ! Enough space to live. Good wifi connection

What could be improved: One of beds squeak! There wasnt teapot to make a coffee in the morning. We had to boil water in the pot 🙂

  • Exceptional – Przemyslaw from Poland – 28 June 2024 (10/10)

Great location, in the City center, very close to all what You need to see or where You want to eat (15 mins on foot, the furthest). Spacious apartment with 2 clean bathrooms, comfy beds, well enough equipped kitchen and positive host to meet us on site (comms over WhatsApp, English is not an issue).

  • Perfect location to explore the city – Rick from Netherlands – 20 September 2023 (9/10)

Excellen location on the edge of the historical center. For us it was the perfect place to explore Bologna while being able to relax in between visits while not needing at taxi or bus to get back. The apartment was very spacious and clean.

What could be improved: Not a problem for us, but you need to climb quite some stairs to get to the entrance of the apartment.

  • Noisy builders – Steven from United Kingdom – 22 June 2023 (4/10)

    Nice clean space

What could be improved: Workmen turned up at 8am each morning and jackhammered tiles out of the court leading to the property. I was trapped inside for a few hours on my second morning as a consequence. It would seem the owner booked builders and a guest at the same time which was really disappointing and not very relaxing

  • Payment problems – Juan from Chile – 13 June 2023 (8/10)

    Location and appartment size

What could be improved: They say there is a time to check-in, but they did not say if you come after that you are going to be charged with 20 or 40 euros. The charge of 20 euros for arriving one our later than indicated in the advertisement (20:00), seems a bit excessive. It is not the best way to welcome guests, especially if the announcement do not indicates that there will be a charge of that magnitude. They also tried to ask me for an extra tourist tax payment that is not mentioned at the advertisement in booking.
