Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Bologna, and Affittacamere Le Camere di Porta San Felice hits this sweet spot that’s honestly pretty hard to find. The self check-in thing initially made me nervous – you know how it is when you’re dragging luggage through cobblestone streets and just want someone to hand you a key – but it’s actually brilliant. No waiting around in a tiny lobby, no awkward small talk when you roll in at 11 PM after missing three trains.

The location on Via San Felice is what really gets me though. I mean, you’re in Saragozza, which sounds fancy but is really just this lovely residential pocket where actual Bolognese people live. There’s this little bakery about two blocks down that opens at 6 AM and fills the whole street with the smell of fresh focaccia – honestly, better than any hotel breakfast. You’re close enough to walk to the university area without feeling like you’re stuck in tourist central, and the Porta San Felice itself (the actual medieval gate) is right there. Most people rush past it heading to the more famous towers, but there’s something kind of magical about having this 13th-century gateway as your neighborhood landmark.

What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night. Bologna can be pretty lively, especially during the university term, but this stretch of Via San Felice settles down after dinner. The rooms themselves feel more like staying at a friend’s well-appointed apartment than a hotel – there’s attention to detail that you don’t usually get at this price point. The bathrooms are actually spacious (rare in these old buildings), and whoever chose the linens knew what they were doing. I will say the WiFi can be a bit spotty if you’re trying to video call home, but honestly, isn’t that kind of the point of being in Italy? The whole self check-in system works through your phone anyway, so they’ve clearly figured out the tech stuff where it matters. If you’re the type who needs someone to carry your bags or recommend restaurants, this might not be your place. But if you want to feel like you’re actually staying in Bologna rather than just visiting it – and you don’t mind figuring out the (very simple) door code situation – it’s pretty much perfect.

  super comfortable beds. perfectly clean rooms. the kitchen exceeded expectations and comfortable shared lounge. Around 20 minute walk into the city. it was perfect for our short stay.

  we really recoomend! the room was nice and quit, the bed was very comfortable, the shower great and everything was clean and very welcoming. also there is a kitchen with everything you need. the location is good, a big of walking to the very center of old town but the walking is nice (but it is a walk). the best part was the host! she let us do an early check-in, helped us with everything and many questions and even ordered a taxi for us to the airport. great host and place and we really reccomend!
