I mean, sure, everywhere in Bologna Centro claims to be “close to Piazza Maggiore,” but when you can literally hear the evening chatter from the piazza while you’re getting ready for dinner – that’s the real deal. Via Drapperie itself is this fantastic little street that most tourists rush past on their way to the main sights, but honestly, it’s where you want to be. There’s this incredible salumeria right downstairs where I watched the owner slice prosciutto for what seemed like half the neighborhood, and the morning market setup is something you’ll actually want to wake up for. The apartment itself has these gorgeous original details – exposed beams, restored frescoes that aren’t just painted over – but someone clearly put thought into the practical stuff too. The kitchen actually works (revolutionary concept, I know), the wifi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and the bathroom has proper water pressure.

What really won me over, though, was how the owners seem to understand that you want to live like a local, not just sleep in a fancy box. They’ve got this little guidebook with actual recommendations – not just the obvious stuff, but places like the tiny osteria on Via del Pratello where university students go for aperitivo, or the best time to visit Mercato di Mezzo when it’s not completely packed with tour groups. The building can get a bit lively in the evenings since you’re right in the heart of everything, but that’s Bologna for you – if you want silence, you probably shouldn’t be staying three minutes from the city’s main square anyway. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and they actually seem to care about whether you’re enjoying Bologna, not just whether you’ve damaged anything. With a 9.8 rating, I was expecting to find some catch, but honestly? Sometimes places just get the balance right between authentic character and actual comfort.
