You know what struck me first about Smy Bologna Centrale? It’s actually in this perfect sweet spot where you feel like you’re staying somewhere that matters, but without all the tourist trap nonsense. The hotel sits on Viale Angelo Masini, which honestly sounds more intimidating than it is – it’s basically a quiet street that’s close enough to Centrale station that you can walk there with your luggage (about 8 minutes, I timed it), but far enough away that you’re not hearing train announcements at 6 AM.

The building itself has this sort of understated elegance that feels very Bologna, if that makes sense. I mean, this isn’t Florence where every corner screams “look at me,” but there’s something solid and confident about the place. The lobby has these really nice marble floors that echo just enough to feel grand without being echoey, and the staff – well, they actually seem to know the city beyond just the obvious tourist spots. When I asked about where to grab aperitivo that wasn’t completely overrun, the guy at the front desk sent me to this little place on Via del Pratello that turned out to be perfect. That’s the kind of local knowledge you hope for but rarely get.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean, well-appointed, with those European-style bathrooms that are compact but somehow still functional. What I really appreciated was the soundproofing, because Bologna can get surprisingly lively in the evenings (especially around the university area), but you’d never know it from inside. The AC actually works, which might sound obvious but you’d be surprised how many Italian hotels phone that in. And honestly, the beds are properly comfortable – not too soft, not too firm, just right for collapsing after a day of wandering around the porticoes. There’s something to be said for a place that gets the basics right without trying to wow you with gimmicky amenities you’ll never use.

Location-wise, this is where the hotel really shines. You’re a quick walk from the train station, sure, but more importantly you’re positioned perfectly to explore the real Bologna. The morning produce markets in the Quadrilatero are maybe 15 minutes on foot, and you can easily wander over to Piazza Maggiore for that classic Bologna experience. But here’s what I really loved – you’re also close enough to the university quarter that you can experience Bologna’s incredible student energy without being right in the thick of it. The nearby streets have these amazing little osterie and wine bars that feel authentically local, not like they’re performing “authentic” for tourists. After staying here, I get why Bologna works so well as a base for exploring Emilia-Romagna – you’re connected to everything but still in a place that feels like home.

  The hotel is exactly how it’s shown in the photo. Rooms are huge. Everything was spotless and looked new. All utensils and cutlery, along with microwave and dishwasher was present. Bed sheets and towels were clean.
  
  What could be improved: Building lift is a super small but there’s that the owner can do about but just a heads up for future travellers. Request Dimi to kindly put a different colour of curtains as privacy is a issue (especially for women trying to change clothes in bedroom). With the white faint curtains, it’s visible from the office right in front. Better soap in the bathroom if possible.

  Main reception were fantastic on arrival and accommodating. Room was clean, tidy and well laid out.
  Hotel location was perfect for me to come off the marconi express and if you dont mind it, a reasonable distance walk from BolognaFiere Expo. Nice and easy to walk to restaurants in the old quarter. I was`nt expecting much as its a small onsite restaurant, but the food was exceptional. Really pleased.
  
  What could be improved: The restaurant’s menu could use an English translation—it was the one challenge I ran into. Between my questionable Italian and the server’s broken English, we managed to make it work!

  Despite the closeness to train station (which is why we picked to stay here) the area of the hotel is very run down and the street is quite rough. Wouldn’t recommend being here on your own.

  The hotel was clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. The location was fine for us. We wanted to be near the train station because we planned to use the train a few mornings. It was about a 20 minute walk to the main piazza. We didn't mind the walk.
  
  What could be improved: The parking garage is very convenient to the hotel, but it is expensive.

  Within 5 minutes walking distance to central station and about 15 minutes walk to shops and piazza maggiore.
  
  What could be improved: Price of the hotel is not the cheapest but accommodation in Bologna is quite expensive. Some of the food breakfast was dry and cold like scrambled eggs and sausages.
