But being up on the top floors, you get this weird sense of being above it all while still being right in the thick of things. You can walk to Piazza Maggiore in maybe ten minutes, and honestly, you’ll pass some of the best little osterie on the way. There’s this tiny place called Osteria del Sole that locals pack into around aperitivo time – you literally can’t miss it because there’s always a crowd spilling onto the sidewalk.

What really got me about this place was the attention to detail in the rooms. The floors have this rich, warm wood that actually creaks a little when you walk (which I know sounds annoying, but it’s kind of charming?), and the windows are these massive things that let in all this golden light in the late afternoon. The bathroom situation is solid too – good water pressure, which you honestly can’t take for granted in older Italian buildings. I stayed here during late spring, and you know what? Even with all the action happening down on the street, once you close those windows, it gets surprisingly quiet. The AC works well enough, though like most places in Bologna, you probably won’t need it cranked unless you’re there in peak summer.

The staff really knows their stuff about the city – not just the obvious tourist spots, but actual useful information. When I asked about parking (because driving in Bologna is basically a nightmare), they pointed me toward this little lot about five minutes away that most visitors never find. And when I mentioned I wanted to try some proper tortellini, they didn’t just say “oh, go anywhere” – they gave me specific recommendations based on what I was looking for. That kind of local knowledge makes a huge difference.

Here’s what I’d tell anyone considering this place: if you want to feel like you’re actually living in Bologna for a few days rather than just passing through, this is your spot. The 8.5 rating makes total sense – it’s not trying to be some fancy luxury hotel, but it nails the things that actually matter. You’re staying in a real neighborhood, you can walk everywhere worth going, and you get that slightly residential feel that makes you understand why people fall in love with this city. Plus, there’s something satisfying about taking that elevator up to your own little slice of Bologna every evening after a day of wandering those medieval streets.

  What could be improved: It rained very heavily while we were there and the roof leaked in several places. Poorly equipped, would have been good to have a washing machine. Key situation is a bit of a nuisance, you need the key to open the gates but on checkout you are asked to leave the key in the apartment, so we had to open the gate, drive out, one of us had to sprint back into the apartment to leave the key, we had to find a place to stop (not easy) so we could pick our key runner up. They need a key safe on the outside
