You know what struck me first about Mascarella 86? It’s tucked into this perfectly lived-in stretch of Via Mascarella where you’ve got actual Bolognese life happening around you – not the touristy stuff, but real neighborhood energy. I mean, there’s a fantastic little osteria literally two doors down where I watched the same group of locals argue about football every morning over their espresso. The building itself has that solid, no-nonsense Bologna feel – think restored historic bones with modern apartment sensibilities rather than hotel-hotel vibes.

The apartments themselves are honestly better than I expected from the photos. Mine had these gorgeous original ceiling details (you’ll know what I mean when you see them), and the kitchen was actually functional – like, I could’ve cooked a proper meal if I’d wanted to, not just reheated leftovers. The bathroom situation was solid too, with decent water pressure, which… well, anyone who’s stayed in Italian apartments knows that’s not always a given. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stayed at night, even though you’re right in the thick of things. The street gets lively during aperitivo hours – actually, scratch that, it gets properly buzzing – but somehow the sound doesn’t carry much into the rooms.

Location-wise, this is where it gets good. You’re maybe eight minutes on foot from Piazza Maggiore, but here’s the thing – you’re also right by all the university action, which means incredible energy and (more importantly) incredible food prices. That whole stretch toward Via Zamboni is gold for eating and drinking, and you’ll figure out pretty quickly that the students know where the good stuff is. Plus, if you’re planning day trips, the train station is totally walkable, though I’d probably grab a taxi if I had heavy luggage. The neighborhood has this sweet spot quality where you feel like you’re living in Bologna rather than just visiting it, if that makes sense. I actually ended up extending my stay an extra two nights because I got so comfortable with the morning routine – coffee at the bar across the street, then wandering through the Mercato di Mezzo for lunch ingredients. The staff was helpful without being hovering, and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. Honestly, for the price point and that 8.8 rating, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for in a Bologna base.

  Mascarella 86 apartment is a beutiful apartment, and ideally located. On one hand, it is in the old town, and on the other the building is in a very quiet spot, so you can enjoy undisturbed sleep. But once you go out you feel the hustle and bustle of the Bologa old town. The building itself is super modern and that is also reflected in the apartment.

  Excellent, modern apartment located in the vicinity of a Old Town. The property has every necessery amenities (fully equipped kitchen, iron, AC, washing machine, dishwasher). Spotlessly clean, good communcation with the host, who gave every information in order to retrieve the keys from the safebox. Highly recommend.

  Amazing place to stay at. It has a great location, with many restaurants and cafés nearby, but still very quiet. Just next to the university district. Very clean, new, and functional. Great communication with the owners, very responsive.

  The apartment is brand new, equipped with all facilities (dishwasher and washing machine, ironing table, etc.) and very comfortable. It is located very close to the University of Bologna and to the city centre, and yet located in a very quiet courtyard. There is a bus stop a few minutes from the apartment that connects the apartment to all the major destinations. The host is extremely kind, helpful and easy to communicate with. I would definitely come back!

  The accommodation is located close to the historic center of Bologna and not so far from the train station and within easy reach of monuments, restaurants, bars and cafes. The apartment is brand new, newly furnished and very functionally furnished and comfortable. Regarding the equipment, some things were missing, for example a kettle, a wine opener and especially WIFI (I assume it is still in the process). On the contrary, everything was very clean and the staff very helpful. Thanks to this accommodation in Bologna, we were very satisfied and left excited!
