You know what struck me first about Maison Indipendenza? The name actually means something here – Via dell’Indipendenza is this wonderfully busy street that cuts right through Bologna’s heart, and staying at number 29 puts you in the thick of everything without feeling like you’re camping in Times Square. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but somehow the hotel itself feels like this calm pocket tucked away from the chaos.

The building has that classic Bolognese elegance – you know, the kind where the lobby doesn’t try too hard but still makes you feel like you’ve arrived somewhere special. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know the city (not just the tourist spots). When I asked about where locals go for aperitivo, the guy at the desk didn’t just point me toward the obvious places near the Due Torri – he sent me to this little spot on Via del Pratello that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, but honestly, the real win is the location. You’re close enough to the university area that you get some of that student energy, but far enough from the late-night party streets that you can actually sleep.

Here’s something I didn’t expect – the morning routine around here is fantastic. Bologna wakes up early, and from around 7 AM you can hear the city coming alive outside: the coffee machines firing up at the bar downstairs, people heading to work, that particular sound of Italian conversation drifting up from the street. It’s not noisy exactly, just… alive. The breakfast situation is decent (nothing revolutionary, but good coffee and proper pastries), though honestly, with Bologna’s incredible café culture right outside your door, you’d be crazy not to explore. I’d usually grab a quick espresso at the hotel then wander down to Mercato delle Erbe for something more substantial. The 8.6 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it nails the fundamentals and puts you exactly where you want to be. If you’re the type who likes to walk everywhere and stumble onto hidden trattorias, this is your spot. Just don’t expect a pool or fancy spa – this is about location, comfort, and being in the real Bologna, not some sanitized tourist bubble.

  The host was really helpful. My flight was delayed but he had no issue helping my friend check in, instead of waiting for my arrival. The apartment is comfortable, close to the train station, and even though the entrance is in the main street it is really quiet. The kitchen was equipped with the essentials, the bathroom included some toiletries, and even some tea and coffee was provided.
  
  What could be improved: The only downside was that the shower would not keep the water hot, it would slowly run cold and then warm again.

  What could be improved: The elevator does not work to the first floor where the apartment is, however the host was very helpful with our luggage when we arrived.
  The apartment is on a very busy, noisy street, which is part of being so central. Those who are sensitive to noise at night should be aware of this.

  Location was amazing, a lot of shops and restaurants. Plus so much amazing architecture and culture.
