You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from an apartment rental in San Donato – honestly, I booked this place purely because it’s literally across from the Bologna Fiera, and I had an early morning conference. But IN FIERA 5 turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you feel like you actually know what you’re doing when you travel. The building on Via Ermete Zacconi looks pretty standard from the outside, but once you’re inside, it’s clear someone put real thought into making this work for business travelers who don’t want to feel like they’re camping out in a hotel room for a week.

The apartment itself is spacious in that way Italian places do well – not massive, but everything’s arranged so smartly that you’ve got room to actually live. There’s a proper kitchen (I mean, you’re in Bologna, you’re going to want to hit the local markets), and the living area has this lived-in comfort that makes you want to kick off your shoes and stay in for the evening. The bedroom’s quiet too, which honestly surprised me given how close we are to the fairgrounds. I was bracing for construction noise or early morning setup sounds, but the windows do their job. The whole place feels like someone’s well-kept city apartment that they happen to rent out – there are actual books on the shelves and decent coffee in the kitchen, not those sad little packets you usually get.

What really sold me on this place, though, is how it sits in the neighborhood. San Donato isn’t touristy at all, which means you’re getting real Bologna life just outside your door. There’s a fantastic little osteria about two blocks down that I never would have found if I’d stayed in the city center, and the morning market on Via Aristotile is where actual locals do their shopping. The tram connection into central Bologna is dead simple – takes maybe fifteen minutes to get to Piazza Maggiore, and you don’t have to deal with the chaos of staying right in the thick of things. Plus, if you’re here for the Fiera like I was, you literally walk across the street. I watched people struggling with taxis and parking while I was sipping espresso on the balcony five minutes before my meetings started. The host was responsive without being hovering – answered my questions about the neighborhood quickly, left good recommendations, then let me be. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re trying to get work done but still want to feel like you’re experiencing the city properly.

  The location is quiet, a little bit far from the center but very manageable. We both walked and used buses to reach Piazza Maggiore. The apartment is clean and well-maintained, with high ceilings: it feels very comfortable and relatively spacious. The balcony is a really nice feature. Beds were comfortable enough with fresh linens and good towels also. Furnishing is basic but pleasant. It’s a great option for groups.

  What could be improved: It would be nice to have a table instead of the bar counter in the kitchen. Additionally, provision of coffee grounds, oil, salt and pepper, and basic shampoo/soap would go the extra mile. Mosquito nets on the windows would be great to better enable using natural ventilation. Pillows could be more ample.

  Very welcoming host in spite of our late arrival with helpful advice about what to see and where to eat. Kitchen was well equipped. The flat was very clean and a 20 to 30 minute walk from tbe centre.

  Ennio was a great host, nothing was too much of a problem. The apartment is very conveniently placed for visiting the old town and there are also good bars/cafes close by. Great value for money as well when you look at the cost of some other apartments in Bologna.
  
  What could be improved: There is not a lot of space for lounging around as the only room outwith the bedrooms is a kitchen with a small couch and seating at a worktop opposite the kitchen units. To be fair we were out most of the time so it was not a major issue.

  Spacious apartment, balcony, everything was clean. We got 2 sets of keys which was very convenient. Nice communication and recommendations from hosts.
