You know what surprised me about Casa Calypso? It’s tucked away on the fifth floor of this gorgeous historic building on Via Rizzoli, and honestly, I almost walked right past it the first time. The address says piano 5 int 42, which basically means you’re taking the elevator up to what feels like someone’s elegant apartment – and that’s exactly the vibe they’re going for.

The location is actually perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without the tourist chaos. Via Rizzoli connects you straight to Piazza Maggiore in about three minutes on foot, but you’re technically in the quieter university quarter where locals actually live and work. I mean, there’s this amazing little osteria right downstairs that I never would have found otherwise, and the morning sounds are more espresso machines than tour groups – which, let’s be honest, is exactly what you want in Bologna. The rooms have this sophisticated residential feel, like staying in a well-traveled friend’s place rather than a hotel. The design strikes this nice balance between boutique charm and actually being comfortable – I’m talking good lighting for reading, decent closet space, and bathrooms that don’t make you feel like you’re in a cruise ship cabin.

What really sold me was how the staff seemed to actually know Bologna, not just the obvious stuff but like where to get the best mortadella on a Sunday when half the city’s closed, or which gelato place the university students hit up (spoiler: it’s not the one with the long tourist line). The 8.9 rating makes sense because they’ve figured out that whole “local insider” thing without being pretentious about it. Sure, it’s not huge – this is definitely more intimate than some sprawling hotel complex – but that works in its favor. You’ll hear some street noise if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing, but honestly, it’s just the sound of a real neighborhood doing its thing. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend letting them know if you’re arriving late since it’s not a 24-hour desk situation. The breakfast setup is simple but uses actual good ingredients, which feels very Bologna – they’d rather do a few things well than offer everything mediocre.

  Location was absolutely perfect! 20 minutes walk from Bologna Centrale. Lots of restaurants and coffee bars around the corner or across the street

  Location is amazing, right in the main square. The view from the mansionette window is breathtaking, I could have sat there all day. The property was a good cool temperature and the space is perfect for one or a couple.
  
  What could be improved: The kitchen could have a few more items (like a tea towel and salt and oil), but honestly, the property is wonderful. Nic was very helpful in helping me get into the property, and the concierge was very welcoming.
