And here’s something I didn’t expect: you can actually walk to the university area pretty easily, so there’s this nice energy of students and locals mixing together, especially in the evenings. The building itself has that worn-in elegance you find in older Italian cities – thick walls, high ceilings, the kind of architecture that makes you feel like you’re part of the city’s story rather than just passing through.

The rooms have this modern comfort level (thank god for good air conditioning in summer) but they’ve kept elements that remind you you’re staying in a 4-star place in a medieval city. The staff clearly knows Bologna inside and out; they gave me restaurant recommendations that weren’t just the obvious touristy spots, and their directions were spot-on. Check-in was smooth, though fair warning – navigating those narrow streets with luggage can be a bit of an adventure if you’re not used to it.
