Look, I’ll be straight with you – when I first saw the name “4 Star Bologna Train Station – Self Check-In,” I honestly thought it was going to be one of those sterile business hotels where you feel like you’re sleeping in an airport terminal. But you know what? This place on Viale Angelo Masini actually surprised me in the best way possible.

The self check-in thing is legit genius, especially if you’re rolling in on one of those late trains from Rome or Milan (and trust me, Italian trains love their delays). You’re literally a five-minute walk from Bologna Centrale – I mean, you can hear the gentle hum of the station, but it’s not that jarring clatter that keeps you up all night. The street itself is pretty quiet, lined with those typical Bolognese buildings with their warm terracotta facades. I actually loved walking past the little cafés and seeing locals grab their morning espresso before work – it felt authentically neighborhood-y, not touristy at all.

The rooms themselves… well, they’re doing something right with that 8.6 rating. Everything feels fresh and thoughtfully designed – none of that generic hotel furniture that looks like it came from the same catalog as every other place. The beds are properly comfortable (and I’m picky about mattresses), and honestly, the bathrooms are nicer than what I’ve got at home. What I really appreciated were the little touches that show someone actually thinks about what travelers need – decent lighting for reading, enough outlets that you don’t have to unplug the lamp to charge your phone, and blackout curtains that actually block out the morning light when you’re trying to sleep off jet lag.

The neighborhood is where this place really shines though. You’re close enough to walk to the historic center – maybe fifteen minutes to Piazza Maggiore if you’re moving at a decent pace – but you’re also right in the mix of real Bologna life. There’s this fantastic little osteria about two blocks away where the locals go (I won’t name it because it’s already crowded enough), and the morning market on Via Ugo Bassi is just around the corner. Plus, if you’re planning day trips to Florence or Venice, you literally can’t beat the location – grab a cornetto and coffee downstairs, walk five minutes, and you’re on the platform.

The self check-in process was smoother than I expected – they send you clear instructions, and there’s actually someone available by phone if you run into issues. I arrived around 10 PM on a Thursday and had zero problems getting in. The whole setup feels modern without being cold, if that makes sense. It’s like they took the efficiency of a business hotel and added some actual personality to it. For the price point and that rating, I get why people keep coming back here – it’s one of those places that just works without trying too hard to impress you.

  The location was excellent. It was great that it was close to the train station and the city center. The apartment had all the kitchen utensils we needed. It was new and clean. Even though the weather was very hot, it was so nice to cool off in our apartment because the air conditioning worked well. The staff were also in constant communication with us. If we come again, we will definitely stay here.

  What could be improved: The facility is in an unmarked condo building. I had to stop into a corner bar to obtain directions. Upon entering the facility, there are 9 steps up before reaching the small elevator. This is important to know when you have multiple, heavy bags from extended travel. The check-in office is one one floor and the condo itself was on another floor of the facility. They give out a check in code, not an actual key. It is close to the train station but a 25 min walk to the center of town.

  Very nice apartment with modern facilities and very clean. We didn't have interaction with the staff because we didn't need to. The location is also perfect, with a short walk to the city center. Clear check in instructions are provided, which made it very easy to check in. We also did not experience any noises, even though it's next to a busy road and a train track. Thank you!
  
  What could be improved: Only a couple of minor things; there was a slight buzzing sound from the air conditioning, there was no tray for the oven. And would be great if more coffee was provided for the machine. Otherwise perfect!

  Everything about 4 Star Bologna Train Station was phenomenal! Extremely helpful staff, especially Marco and the sweet lady who helped me with some laundry drying. Our accommodation was very clean and comfortable. We would stay again and longer when we return.

  Amazing location only a few minutes walk from the bus station. Hosts were extremely helpful and nice, and even let us in the apartment few hours earlier than we announced. Everything was clean and well furnished and we were provided with coffee, tea and cold water. The apartment had everything we could wish for, towels, fridge, coffee machine, microwave etc. We were provided with all the important info via WhatsApp. I sincerely recommend it and plan to visit again!
