Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard “Bed End Breakfast Mary’s Tower,” I thought it was some sort of translation mishap. But you know what? This little 4-star gem tucked away on Via Cleto Tomba in San Donato completely won me over, and now I actually find the quirky name kind of endearing. The thing is, San Donato isn’t where most tourists end up, which is exactly why this place works so well. You’re about 15 minutes from Bologna’s centro storico by bus (the 35 line runs pretty regularly), but honestly, staying out here feels like you’re getting a peek into actual Italian neighborhood life instead of just bouncing between tourist traps.

Mary – and yes, there really is a Mary who seems to know every guest’s coffee preference by day two – has created something special here. The building itself has this lovely old-world character (I mean, we’re talking about Bologna, so everything’s got history), but the rooms are surprisingly modern without feeling sterile. My room had these fantastic shutters that actually blocked out the morning light, which was clutch since I’m one of those people who needs complete darkness to sleep. The breakfast spread is where this place really shines though – none of that sad continental buffet nonsense. We’re talking fresh cornetti that are still warm, local cheeses I’d never heard of but definitely need to find again, and coffee that puts most places in the city center to shame. There’s this little courtyard where you can eat when the weather’s nice, and in the evenings, you’ll often find other guests just hanging out there with a glass of wine.

What really sealed the deal for me was how incredibly quiet it gets at night – something you definitely can’t take for granted in Bologna. The neighborhood has this peaceful residential vibe where the loudest thing you’ll hear is maybe someone’s nonna calling down from a balcony. Plus, there’s actually parking available (for a small fee), which anyone who’s tried to navigate Bologna’s ZTL zones will appreciate. The 8.6 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be some fancy luxury hotel, but it nails all the things that actually matter when you’re traveling. Mary and her team just seem to get that sometimes the best travel experiences happen when you feel like you’re staying somewhere real, not just passing through another generic hotel room.

  The hosts are super kind and welcoming. Unfortunatly, I can't speak Italuan, however, they tried their best to accomodate my stays joyful abd comfortable.

  Good location, 15-20 in walk from the train and bus station. Quiet neighbourhood, nice pizzaria only 5 min away. The 5E vouchers for breakfast are more then enough.

  The staff was really thoughtful and made sure that we did not missed anything during our stay. They even offered each of us a 5 EUR voucher every morning for having breakfast at the nearby cafe, which were more than enough to have some coffee, fresh juice and croissants. We were also daily supplied with bottles of fresh water. The room was very clean and cosy and had a spatious terrace.

  Great communication, super clean room and the neighborhood was fantastic. Since it was on the outskirts everytime we went to the Coop or surrounding shops we found incredibly helpful and outgoing people willing to take time as we fumbled through being tourists. Our hosts also were prompt, friendly and kept the room tip top for us.
  
  What could be improved: Maybe fluffier pillows but at home we have special temperpedic pillows, so unfair to expect that
